Turkey Camouflage Art for Kids
How can a turkey hide without wearing a costume?
Instead of dressing up the turkey as another character, this project uses camouflage to help it blend into a background of colorful autumn leaves. Have you ever seen a flock of wild turkeys in an autumn field?
Kids color their turkey and the fall leaves using similar shades of brown, yellow, orange, and red. Then they arrange the leaf shapes around the turkey to make it harder to recognize.
💡 OR choose a completely different palette of colors in similar shades!
The challenge is to hide the turkey while still keeping it somewhere in the artwork!
💡 Ask: Which colors and patterns help your turkey blend into the leaves?
How to Make a Camouflage Turkey
Use colorful fall leaves to create a collage that helps your turkey disappear into its surroundings.
Supplies
- Free turkey camouflage printables
- Markers, crayons, or colored pencils
- Scissors
- Glue stick
Step 1: Print the Turkey and Leaves
Print the turkey outline, fall leaf shapes, and leafy background.

Step 2: Color Your Turkey
Color your turkey using fall colors such as brown, orange, yellow, and dark red. Think about how the turkey’s colors will match the leaves in the finished artwork.
💡 Ask: Would a brightly colored turkey or a brown turkey be easier to hide among fall leaves?
Step 3: Color the Fall Leaves
Color the printable leaves with a variety of autumn shades.
Try using similar colors for the turkey and leaves to help the two blend together. Use different shades of the same color, or experiment with repeating patterns.
Step 4: Cut Out the Pieces
Carefully cut out the turkey and individual leaf shapes. Keep the leaves in a small pile so you can arrange them easily before gluing.

Step 5: Color the Leaf Background
Color the leafy background using the same fall color palette. This creates an extra layer of camouflage because the turkey will be surrounded by similar colors and shapes.

Step 6: Hide Your Turkey!
Arrange your turkey on the background, then begin placing leaves around and partially over it. Experiment with different positions until your turkey is difficult to spot. Glue everything in place and trim the finished picture along the dotted border.

🔎 Challenge: Can someone else find your turkey without you telling them where it is?

Explore the Science of Camouflage
Camouflage helps animals blend into their surroundings.
Some animals blend into their habitats because their colors and patterns resemble the environment. Others use body shapes, markings, or behavior to make themselves harder to see.
In this turkey camouflage activity, you’re using a similar idea through art! The fall colors and overlapping leaf shapes make the turkey harder to distinguish from the background.
Explore: Camouflage, animal adaptations, color, and observation.
Try these questions:
- Which colors make your turkey hardest to find?
- Does adding more leaves make the turkey easier or harder to spot?
- What happens if you use a completely different color for your turkey?
- Can you still find the turkey if only its eyes or beak are visible?

How does this activity connect to science? The project introduces camouflage and how animals can be harder to spot when their colors and patterns match their surroundings.
