YOU WILL NEED:

  • Oil
  • Water
  • Gingerbread Man Silicone Mold
  • Green Food Coloring
  • Pan
  • Oil
  • Eyedropper

EASY SETUP

The night before I used this fun gingerbread man silicone baking tray to make green icy gingerbread men! In the morning I simply covered the bottom of a baking dish with vegetable oil and placed the frozen gingerbread men on top. Add a small container of warm (green) water and an eye dropper!

ALTERNATIVE SUGGESTIONS

Use ice cubes if you don’t have any silicone molds. You can even add glitter or sequins if you have them. Check out our ice melting themes and activities.

Skip the oil and just let the kids melt the icy gingerbread men. The oil is a neat addition to the melting gingerbread man science experiment because of course oil and water do not mix!

Use the eyedropper to suck up water and melt the ice. This encourages tons of fine motor skills practice too. My son is always excited to use eyedroppers, and I believe all the early work we did with them improved his pencil grip!

Use an eyedropper and warm water to melt the ice and observe what happens when the oil and water meet! Ice melt science ideas are easy to do with fun results! Mixing with oil is a unique twist on a classic experiment!

Explore the ice melting and not mixing with the oil! I love to ask him before we start what he thinks will happen! Water molecules and oil molecules aren’t attracted to each other. If you check out our density science bottle, you will also see that oil is less dense or lighter than water!
