Coffee Painting Starry Night Art Project

Pinterest Hidden Image

This Van Gogh–inspired art project introduces students to Starry Night in an unexpected way. Instead of mixing colors, kids create different shades of brown by adjusting the amount of water mixed with instant coffee.

This approach helps students slow down and notice how artists use light and dark values to create movement and depth.

Supplies Needed

  • Starry Night template (printable or student-drawn)
  • Instant coffee
  • Warm water
  • Paintbrushes
  • 3–4 small containers
  • Paper towels

How to Make Coffee Paint and Create Your Artwork

Step 1:
Print the Starry Night template or have students sketch their own night sky.

Step 2:
Mix instant coffee with warm water in separate containers to create light-to-dark values.
More water = lighter value
More coffee = darker value

Step 3:
Paint the night sky using only coffee. Encourage students to use swirling lines and repeated strokes to show movement, focusing on contrast rather than color.

The Element of Art: Value

Value describes how light or dark a color appears. In Starry Night, van Gogh used strong value contrast to create energy and depth in the sky.

Because coffee naturally creates a range of light and dark shades, this project makes value easy to see and understand without introducing complex color mixing.

Extension Ideas

  • Create an original night sky using coffee paint.
  • Compare this project to our mixed media Starry Night art project for kids.
  • Test other natural materials, such as tea or turmeric, to explore changes in value.
