How to Use Halloween LEGO Task Cards

  1. Choose a Challenge: Pick from various designs, such as a haunted house, pumpkin, Frankenstein, or witch’s hat. Each challenge has a unique twist, such as color changes, symmetry building, or speed races.
  2. Follow the Template: Use the template to build the design, or change it up with your own creative ideas!
  3. Complete the Challenge: Try different tasks, like building with your opposite hand, racing against a friend, or finishing a design before your favorite song ends.
  4. Team Up: For some challenges, youโ€™ll need a partner. Roll the dice and take turns adding bricks to the board to see how fast you can finish the design together.

What’s Included:

  • Build It Up Challenge: Double the height of the haunted house by building two layers of bricks.
  • Timer Challenge: Can you build the pumpkin in under 4 minutes? Test your speed with this fun activity.
  • Race Challenge: Find a friend and race to complete the Frankenstein face first!
  • Symmetry Challenge: Finish building the other half of the symmetrical cat face.
  • Color Change Challenge: Rebuild the gravestone with a brand-new color scheme, using any colors except green, gray, or brown.
  • Estimation Challenge: How many bricks will you need to build the witch’s hat? Make your guess, then count your bricks to see if you were right.
  • Opposite Hand Challenge: Can you build the jack-o’-lantern using your non-dominant hand?
  • Upside Down Challenge: Flip the ghost design upside down and give it a spooky twist!
  • Music Challenge: Start your favorite song and build the witchโ€™s broom before it finishes.
  • Teamwork Challenge: Work with a partner to finish building the coffin, one brick at a time by rolling a dice.

How it Relates to STEM:

LEGO is a fantastic tool for developing STEM skills, and it doesn’t just have to be about using Powered Up functions or Mindstorms! Good ole 2×2 and 2×4 bricks will do the trick for our younger engineers. These challenges make the perfect stepping stones to more involved LEGO STEM projects later on!

These Halloween brick building challenges are a great way to incorporate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) into play. Kids practice engineering skills as they follow designs, estimate the number of bricks, and think creatively about how to solve each challenge. By encouraging teamwork, spatial reasoning, and problem-solving, these activities make learning fun!
