A super simple rainbow activity for art that kids of all ages will enjoy doing! Our tape resist rainbow art is easy to set up at home or in the classroom. Plus, they will be able to learn about the tape resist art process. Rainbow activities are perfect for kids!

Rainbow Art with Tape Resist
The tape resist art technique uses tape to block out areas on a canvas or paper, creating sharp, clean lines and patterns. Artists apply paint over the taped areas and then remove the tape to reveal the design.
💡From creating rainbow preschool art to experimenting with the 7 elements of art with tweens, this is a fantastic project for multiple age groups.
This technique incorporates the seven elements of art: line (through the tape’s edges), shape (created by the tape’s pattern), color (applied paint), texture (varied paint effects), space (negative areas left by the tape), value (shading and paint layers), and form (three-dimensional effects from overlapping tape).
YOU WILL NEED
- 5X7 Canvas print or sturdy paper
- Tape
- Craft paint (rainbow colors)
- Scissors
- Paintbrushes
- Paint pallet
💡Note: This can also be done with markers, crayons, or colored pencils and using whatever size canvas or paper desired!

How to Make a Rainbow Painting
STEP 1. Cut the tape into different lengths for the canvas print—place pieces of tape onto the canvas in the desired design. Press the tape down with your fingers, making sure the tape is sticking well so the paint doesn’t go under the tape.
💡 Tip: You can criss-cross the tape, do parallel lines, initials, etc. What fun shapes can you make?

STEP 2. Choose the paint colors for your rainbow art. Learn more about the colors of the rainbow here.

STEP 3. Paint each section of the design with the craft paint.

STEP 4. Set aside and allow to dry completely. Use another coat of paint if desired. Allow it to dry.

STEP 5. Remove the tape and display.
