This interactive activity is a fun way for kids to learn about the layers of soil through a free printable soil layers model. Perfect for geology activities or earth sciences lessons, this hands-on project allows kids to explore the soil profile and understand the role of humus, topsoil, subsoil, bedrock, and minerals in soil formation.
What is Soil?
Soil is an essential part of our planet and plays a key role in supporting life. It provides plant nutrients, helps filter water, and is home to a vast hidden world of biodiversity, including microbes, earthworms, and insects. But did you know that soil isn’t just dirt? It’s made up of different layers of soil, each with unique characteristics!

Recommended Grade Level: Best for Grades 1-5
Supplies Needed:
- Printable Soil Diorama Template (see below)
- Scissors
- Glue or tape
- Colored pencils, crayons, or markers (for black & white versions)

How to Make the Soil Layers Model:
- Download and print the free printable soil diorama template on cardstock paper for sturdiness. Choose between the pre-colored or black-and-white versions for kids to color in themselves.
- Cut out the template along the solid lines. Be sure to include the tabs to help with assembly.
- Fold along the dotted lines to form the 3D structure.
- Glue or tape the edges and tabs to assemble the soil profile model.
- Label each soil horizon using the included labels or write them out for extra practice.
- Decorate with trees, rocks, and plant roots to complete the landscape!

Soil Layers Science Information
Soil is not just dirt! It is a mixture of organic matter, minerals, small rocks, and microorganisms that create the foundation of life on Earth’s surface. The different soil layers, known as soil horizons, each serve a unique purpose.
Main Layers of Soil (Soil Profile)
- O-Horizon (Organic Layer): This thin layer of material consists of humus, garden waste, and decomposing plant matter that helps provide rich material for new plant growth.
- A-Horizon (Topsoil Layer): Contains the most nutrients, organic matter, and micro-organisms that support plant roots and crops. This is where most earthworms and insects live!
- E-Horizon (Eluviation Layer): This layer experiences a significant loss of minerals due to the process of erosion and leaching.
- B-Horizon (Subsoil Layer): Contains deposited minerals like phosphorus, potassium, and calcium from upper layers and has a clay-heavy texture.
- C-Horizon (Parent Rock Material): Made of weathered rock fragments that serve as a source of parent material for new soil formation.
- R-Horizon (Bedrock Layer): The solid rock foundation beneath all the layers. Bedrock is made up of different types of rock, such as metamorphic rock or basalt rock.
Understanding these various layers helps soil scientists, also known as pedologists, study the plant-soil relations and how soil supports different types of weather and ecosystems.

Extension Activities:
- Soil Layer Jar Experiment: Fill a clear cup with topsoil, subsoil, and sand, then shake with water. Watch the layers settle to form a mini soil profile!
- Plant Growth Experiment: Test how plants grow in different soil layers. Do plants grow better in topsoil or subsoil?
- Soil Texture Investigation: Collect clay, silt, and sand samples from different locations and compare their soil properties.
- Edible Soil Layers Activity: Create a soil profile model using Oreo cookies (bedrock), chocolate pudding (subsoil), butterscotch chips (parent rock material), and gummy worms (organic matter)!
