Welcome to our latest ocean STEAM project, where we combine the ocean’s wonders with the creativity of art! Our free printable reef information sheet and art templates will guide your kids through a colorful exploration of barrier reefs, fringe reefs, and atolls.

What Are Coral Reefs?
Coral reefs are vibrant underwater ecosystems teeming with life. There are three main types of coral reefs:
Barrier Reefs: These are the largest and most famous reefs, like the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. They run parallel to the shore but are separated by deep water.
Fringe Reefs: These reefs grow directly from the shoreline, creating a fringe along the coast.
Atolls: Atolls are ring-shaped reefs that encircle a lagoon, often formed on top of submerged volcanoes.
Coral Reef Art Project
In this STEAM project, children will create texture-rich artworks inspired by coral reefs using simple materials like sponges, bubble wrap, and watercolors. They’ll learn about different types of reefs while expressing their creativity through art.
Materials Needed:
- Free printable reef information sheet (see below)
- Free printable ocean reef background and fish templates (see below)
- Sponges
- Bubble wrap
- Watercolors and brushes
- Scissors
- Glue
- Paper towels
- Water containers

Instructions:
STEP 1: Explore our free printable reef information sheet. Discuss the different types of coral reefs and what makes each unique.
STEP 2: Gather all your materials. Print out the ocean reef background and fish templates. Cut out the fish and set them aside.
STEP 3: Dip sponges into watercolor paint and dab them onto the reef background to create textured coral shapes.
STEP 4: Paint over a piece of bubble wrap and press it onto the paper to make bubble patterns that resemble coral textures.
STEP 5: Use watercolors to add more details to your reef, like seaweed, anemones, and coral. Encourage children to experiment with colors and patterns.

STEP 6: Once the background is dry, cut out the fish templates. Arrange and glue them onto the reef background to create a vibrant underwater scene.

What is Texture Art?
In our coral reef art project, texture brings the underwater world to life. Texture refers to the surface quality of a work of art. It can be visual (how it looks) or tactile (how it feels).
