7 Elements of Art: Texture

STEAM Lesson: Properties of Materials

This fabric scrap pumpkin project can easily be integrated into a STEAM lesson by exploring the properties of materials. As students work on their pumpkin collages, introduce them to natural vs. synthetic (human-made) fabrics.

Have them examine the differences between cotton, wool (natural), and polyester or nylon (synthetic). Discuss how natural fabrics are made from plant and animal fibers, while synthetic fabrics are human-made, often from plastic.

This hands-on exploration encourages children to observe and compare properties of materials, such as texture, flexibility, and durability, blending art with science and engineering concepts.

Extension Ideas:

  • Pumpkin Patch Collage: Create multiple fabric pumpkins in different sizes to assemble a pumpkin patch scene. This is a fantastic group activity for a classroom!
  • Textile Exploration: Introduce kids to the textile world by exploring different fabric scraps. Discuss the textures, patterns, and whether they are natural or synthetic materials.
  • Mixed Media Art: To enhance the texture of your collage, add other fall-themed materials like leaves, buttons, or dried beans.
  • Pumpkin Garland: Make several fabric pumpkins and string them together to create a festive fall garland for classroom decoration.
