Don’t you just love a good game of checkers? A classic game but an awesome game for everyone, including kids and adults. There are so many valuable skills you can learn from a friendly game of checkers and our LEGO checker board is definitely the new way to play checkers. I love building LEGO games like tic tac toe and skittles, so we had to have a LEGO checkers game too. Make sure to check out our latest book, The Unofficial Guide to Learning with LEGO for more awesome ideas.
HOMEMADE LEGO CHECKER BOARD GAME
This LEGO checker board is actually very easy to make and lucky to know that a standard size LEGO base plate is the perfect size. Your classic base plate in any color will do the trick. Do you know how many squares there are in a checker board? I was at the LEGO store one day and googled it. 64 squares!
SUPPLIES

{32} 4×4 plates one color and {32} 4×4 plates another color = 64 total {or any combination of plates, flats that will get you to those numbers.
{20} 2×2 LEGO Bricks in two colors {10 of each}
There are a few ways you can find the 4×4 plates. Check Amazon, you will find some links below. Check eBay if you like to shop there. Check bricklink.com or head to your nearest LEGO store and use their pick -a -brick wall. How did we get all our LEGO, read about it here.
MAKE YOUR LEGO CHECKER BOARD
This step is pretty self explanatory if you have ever seen a checker board. Though it is a nice little patterning activity for kids. Just alternate your two colors until you have filled in the whole base plate. We were all a little tickled by how perfectly sized the base plate is for making a checker board.

PICK YOUR LEGO CHECKER BOARD PIECES
2×2 bricks really make the perfect checkers for this size board because each brick fits nicely in the middle of the 4×4 plate. Try different colors. We found it to be a little confusing when we had the red on the red squares. I completely forgot I still had one piece that hadn’t even moved because it was camouflaged so well. When you need a king, just plop another 2×2 brick on top!
MAKE SURE TO CHECK OUT OUR BOOK TOO!
My husband pointed out how awesome this LEGO checker board is for pausing a game or traveling with the game. If you have to put your game on hold, just push the bricks into the plates. {When we play at home we leave them floating on top.} You can easily come back to it. Pack it up for travel too. Play it on the go and you won’t have to worry about tipping over the board and ruining the game!
