Make Light Up Circuit Ornaments

Electricity is all around us, powering everything from lights to gadgets. In this project, you’ll build a simple circuit to make an LED light glow. Learn how conductivity works, explore positive and negative terminals, and create your own glowing holiday ornament!

💡Make sure to look through all of our Christmas science ornaments here.

Supplies:

  • Cardstock cut into festive shapes (free printable)
  • Copper tape (conductive adhesive tape)
  • 3V coin cell battery
  • LED light (5mm or smaller, any color)
  • Clear tape
  • Scissors
  • Hole punch
  • Markers, stickers, or glitter for decoration
  • Ribbon or string for hanging

How to Make Light-Up Circuit Ornaments

Design the Ornament

  • Cut out a holiday shape from cardstock. Use our free printable!
  • Decorate your ornament with markers, beads, stickers, or glitter, but leave space for the LED and battery.

Create the Circuit Path

  • Use copper tape to make a pathway for the circuit on your ornament.
  • Plan for the tape to connect from one side of where the LED will sit to the other, leaving a gap for the LED.
  • Ensure the tape also connects to where the battery will be placed on the back.

Add the LED

  • Push the LED through the ornament where you want it to light up.
  • Connect the long leg (positive) of the LED to one side of the copper tape and the short leg (negative) to the other.

Attach the Battery

  • Place the 3V coin cell battery on the back where the copper tape ends meet.
  • Secure the battery with clear tape, ensuring the tape connects the copper pathways to the correct battery terminals (positive to positive, negative to negative).
  • Test the circuit by pressing the battery—your LED should light up!

Secure and Hang

  • Once the LED lights up, tape down all components to keep the circuit stable.
  • Punch a hole at the top of the ornament and attach a ribbon or string for hanging.

Circuit Ornaments Tips & Tricks

  • Testing Troubleshooting: If the LED doesn’t light up, check all connections for gaps or looseness. Make sure the LED legs are touching the copper tape properly.
  • Circuit Path Tips: Smooth out the copper tape to avoid breaks in the circuit.
  • Extra Decorations: Use translucent materials like tissue paper to diffuse the LED light for a glowing effect.

How Do Circuit Ornaments Work?

The Light-Up Circuit Ornament uses a simple circuit to light up an LED. A circuit is like a loop that lets electricity flow. The circuit must be complete for the LED to light up so the electricity can move all the way around.

The battery gives power to the circuit. It has two sides: a positive (+) side and a negative (-) side. Electricity flows from the positive side, through the circuit, and back to the negative side.

We use copper tape to make a path for the electricity. Copper is a good conductor, which means electricity moves through it easily. The tape connects the battery to the LED.

The LED light is what glows. It only works if electricity flows in the right direction. The long leg of the LED connects to the positive side, and the short leg connects to the negative side. If they are switched, the LED won’t light up.

When the circuit is complete, electricity flows from the battery, through the copper tape, and into the LED. This makes the LED light up! If there’s a break in the circuit or the connections aren’t correct, the LED won’t work. This project is a fun way to learn how circuits and electricity work!
