Science is exciting because it allows us to explore, experiment, and discover new things! But before we get started on all the science experiments, we need to make sure we are safe in the science lab. Safety is always the most important rule. These simple science safety tips will help kids (and adults!) have fun while staying safe.

Branch of Science: General Science Practices
Grade Level: Elementary (K–5)
Concepts Explored: Scientific investigation, responsibility, safety procedures
Every good scientist follows safety rules. Whether you’re in a school science lab or doing experiments at home, safety rules protect you and those around you. These habits—like wearing goggles, tying back long hair, and keeping your space clean—help prevent accidents and keep the focus on the fun of experimenting!

Science Lab Safety Rules
1. Before You Begin
- Put on safety goggles and any other safety gear.
- Read or listen to all instructions before touching materials.
- Tie back long hair and secure loose clothing.
- Keep your workspace clean and organized.
🔎 Why it matters: Preparing before you start helps prevent spills, accidents, and distractions.
2. During the Experiment
- Never taste or smell chemicals unless told to by a teacher. (If smelling, use the wafting method.)
- Handle tools and equipment carefully.
- No running or horseplay in the lab.
- Keep your hands away from your face and mouth.
🔎 Why it matters: Staying focused and careful during the experiment keeps everyone safe and helps you get accurate results.
3. If Something Goes Wrong
- Tell the adult right away if you spill or break something.
- Know where the sink, fire extinguisher, or first aid kit is.
- Follow the adult’s directions for cleaning up safely.
🔎 Why it matters: Accidents happen, but knowing how to respond keeps small problems from becoming big ones.
4. After the Experiment
- Turn off and put away equipment.
- Clean your workspace.
- Wash your hands with soap and water.
- Return all materials to their correct spot.
🔎 Why it matters: Leaving the lab clean and safe makes it ready for the next experiment!
