What Is The Shark Life Cycle?
Sharks have been swimming in Earth’s oceans for more than 400 million years! While there are hundreds of different shark species, they all grow and change throughout their lives.
Unlike many fish, not all sharks lay eggs. Depending on the species, sharks may:
- Lay eggs in protective egg cases called mermaid’s purses
- Hatch from eggs inside their mother before being born
- Be born alive
No matter how they begin life, every shark grows through several important stages before becoming an adult.
Shark Life Cycle Stages
1. Embryonic Stage (Egg)
Some sharks begin life inside a tough egg case, often called a mermaid’s purse. Inside the egg, the embryo grows until it is ready to hatch.
Other shark species develop inside their mothers rather than in an egg case.
2. Pup Stage
Baby sharks are called pups.
Unlike many baby animals, shark pups are born ready to survive on their own. They can swim immediately and begin searching for food without help from their parents.
3. Juvenile Stage
As sharks grow, they become juveniles.
Young sharks often stay in shallow coastal waters where there are fewer large predators. During this stage, they continue growing stronger while learning to hunt.
4. Sub-Adult Stage
The sub-adult stage is similar to the teenage years in humans.
The shark continues growing, explores larger areas of the ocean, and prepares for adulthood.
5. Adult Stage
An adult shark has reached full size and is ready to reproduce.
Adult sharks are skilled hunters and play an important role in keeping ocean ecosystems healthy by helping maintain balanced food webs.
