WHAT IS A ZENTANGLE?

First, what is a Zentangle? A Zentangle is an unplanned and unstructured pattern usually created on small square tiles in black and white. The patterns are called tangles. You can make a tangle with one or a combination of dots, lines, circles, squares, swirls, waves etc.

The Zentangle Method is an art form that combines structured patterns with mindfulness. It was developed by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas as a way to encourage creativity, relaxation, and focus. The name “Zentangle” is a combination of “Zen,” which represents a state of meditation and mindfulness, and “tangle,” which refers to the intricate patterns used in the art.

The Zentangle Method involves creating small, abstract drawings using repetitive patterns called tangles. These tangles are usually composed of simple, elemental strokes such as dots, lines, curves, and orbs. The process of creating Zentangle art is meant to be intuitive and relaxing, with no predetermined outcome or need for artistic talent.

Here are some key principles of the Zentangle Method:

  1. Mindfulness and Focus: Zentangle encourages individuals to be fully present in the moment, focusing on the strokes and patterns being created.
  2. Deliberate and Repetitive Strokes: Zentangle drawings are built using deliberate, slow, and repetitive strokes, which can have a calming and meditative effect.
  3. No Erasing or Mistakes: There are no mistakes in Zentangle. Unintentional marks or deviations from the original plan are embraced as opportunities for creative exploration.
  4. Structured Patterns: Zentangle uses a variety of structured patterns, called tangles, which can be combined and repeated to create intricate and visually appealing designs.
  5. Portable and Accessible: Zentangle can be done with minimal materials, making it a portable and accessible art form that can be practiced anywhere.
  6. Relaxation and Stress Relief: Many practitioners find Zentangle to be a relaxing and therapeutic practice, helping to reduce stress, enhance focus, and promote a sense of well-being.

Zentangle art can be created on small paper tiles using fine-tipped pens or pencils. The process of creating these drawings allows individuals to tap into their creativity, express themselves artistically, and experience a sense of mindfulness and relaxation.

WHY DO PROCESS ART WITH KIDS?

What do you think of when you think of children’s art activities? Marshmallow snowmen? Fingerprint flowers? Pasta ornaments?

While there isn’t anything wrong with these crafty projects, they all have one thing in common. The focus is on the result. Usually, an adult has created a plan for a project with one goal in mind, and it does not leave much room for true creativity.

For children, the real fun (and learning) is in the process, not the product! Hence, the importance of process art!

Kids are curious, they want their senses to come alive. They want to feel and smell and sometimes even taste the process. They want to be free to let their minds wander through the creative process.

How can we help them reach this state of ‘flow’ – (the mental state of being completely present and fully immersed in a task)? Process art activities! Click here for more process art ideas!
