What Is A Zentangle?

First, what is a Zentangle? A Zentangle is an unplanned and unstructured pattern usually created on small square tiles in black and white. The patterns are called tangles. You can make a tangle with one or a combination of dots, lines, circles, squares, swirls, waves, etc.

Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas developed the Zentangle method to encourage creativity, relaxation, and focus. The name “Zentangle” is a combination of “Zen,” which represents a state of meditation and mindfulness, and “tangle,” which refers to the intricate patterns used in the art.

Creating Zentangle art is meant to be intuitive and relaxing, with no predetermined outcome or need for artistic talent. Meaning there is no list of rules to follow!

Zen Doodle for Kids vs. Zentangle for Kids

Both Zen Doodle and Zentangle are great ways for kids to explore creativity and mindfulness through drawing, but they have key differences.

Zen Doodle is freeform and playful, allowing kids to mix patterns, shapes, and even recognizable objects like animals or scenery.

Zentangle, on the other hand, follows a structured method, using step-by-step patterns within small spaces (often tiles). Both improve fine motor skills and focus, but Zen Doodle is best for open-ended creativity, while Zentangle encourages pattern recognition and relaxation.

  • Use Zen Doodle for open-ended art and Zentangle for mindfulness activities
  • Zen Doodle = Freeform, playful, anything-goes doodling
  • Zentangle = Structured, step-by-step pattern drawing
  • Both support fine motor skills, creativity, and focus

Tips For Using Zentangles For Kids

Mindfulness

Zentangle encourages kids to be fully present in the moment, focusing on the strokes and patterns being created.

No Erasing or Mistakes

There are no mistakes in Zentangle art. Unintentional marks or deviations from the original plan are embraced as opportunities for creative exploration.

Portable and Accessible

Zentangle can be done with minimal materials, making it a portable and accessible art form that can be practiced anywhere and great for groups of kids.

Use Fine Tipped Pens or Pencils

Using fine-tipped pens or pencils, zentangle art can be created on any coloring page. The process of making these drawings allows kids to tap into their creativity, express themselves artistically, and experience a sense of mindfulness and relaxation.
