Apple Investigation
Give each child or small group an apple and encourage them to slow down and really study it. Start with the outside, then cut the apple open and compare what you notice inside and out.

- Knife for adult use

Observe the Outside of the Apple
Before cutting the apple, look closely at the outside. Notice:
- Color
- Shape
- Size
- Skin texture
- Stem
- Leaf, if present
- Spots or markings

Use the Five Senses
Apples are a simple way to practice careful observation.
- Look: What colors and shapes do you see?
- Feel: Is the skin smooth, firm, soft, or bumpy?
- Smell: What does the apple smell like?
- Listen: What sound does it make when you tap it or bite into it?
- Taste: Is it sweet, tart, crisp, or juicy?

Look Inside the Apple
Have an adult cut the apple open. Compare the inside with the outside.
Look for:
- Flesh
- Seeds
- Core
- Skin
- Stem

Count the Seeds
Remove the seeds and count them. The Apple Study printable includes a place to record how many seeds are inside the apple. If you have several apples, compare the totals.
Ask:
- Do all apples have the same number of seeds?
- Which apple had the most?
- Which had the least?
- Were all the seeds the same size?

Predict: Will the Apple Sink or Float?
Before placing the apple in water, predict: Will it sink or float? Put the apple in a clear container of water and observe what happens.

Measure the Apple
Wrap a piece of string around the widest part of the apple. Then measure the string with linking cubes or another nonstandard measuring tool.

After cutting the apple open, use the sorting page to identify:
