Biomes are large areas of the world with their own climate, plants, and animals. In this kid-friendly guide, learn about 8 major biomesโdeserts, rainforests, grasslands, tundra, forests, freshwater, and marineโplus fun activities and worksheets to explore each one.

Biomes for Kids
From the icy tundra to the lush rainforest, Earthโs biomes are home to amazing plants and animals. Learning about biomes helps kids understand climate, geography, and the delicate balance of life on our planet.
๐ In this guide, weโll explore the eight major biomes, sharing kid-friendly facts, fun activities, and worksheets to make learning earth science an interactive experience.
Concepts Covered: Climate, ecosystems, plant and animal adaptations, biodiversity, conservation
Grade Level: 3rdโ6th grade
NGSS Guiding Questions:
- What is the phenomenon? Different regions of Earth have unique climates, plants, and animals that form distinct biomes.
- What data or evidence do I observe? Patterns in temperature, rainfall, plant growth, and animal life vary by biome.
- What can I conclude or design? Climate and geography determine the types of living things in each biome, and humans can impact their balance.
Whether youโre teaching in the classroom or homeschooling, this is a great way to bring Earth science to life.

What Is a Biome?
A biome is a large region on Earth where specific types of plants, animals, and climate patterns exist together. Think of it as a โneighborhoodโ in natureโeverything from the weather to the plants and animals is designed to work in harmony.
Each biome has:
- A climate (temperature & rainfall patterns)
- Specific plants adapted to survive there
- Unique animals with special behaviors or body features
- A role in Earthโs balance and biodiversity
The climateโalong with location and geographyโshapes every biome. For example:
- Deserts are hot and dry, with plants like cacti and animals like camels.
- Rainforests are warm, humid, and filled with dense trees and colorful wildlife.

The 8 Major Biomes
1. Desert Biome
- Climate: Hot or cold deserts, very little rainfall (<10 inches/year)
- Plants: Cacti, aloe vera, sagebrush
- Animals: Camels, fennec foxes, kangaroo rats, Gila monsters
- Fun fact: Many desert animals are nocturnal to avoid the heat.
2. Rainforest Biome
- Climate: Warm, humid, heavy rainfall year-round
- Plants: Orchids, bromeliads, kapok trees
- Animals: Sloths, jaguars, macaws, poison dart frogs
- Fun fact: Rainforests produce much of the worldโs oxygen.
3. Grassland Biome
- Climate: Moderate rainfall, hot summers & cold winters in temperate zones
- Plants: Buffalo grass, big bluestem, acacia trees
- Animals: Bison, lions, zebras, prairie dogs, kangaroos
- Fun fact: Grasslands are ideal for large herds of grazing animals.

4. Tundra Biome
- Climate: Extremely cold, short summers, permafrost
- Plants: Mosses, lichens, Arctic willows
- Animals: Polar bears, caribou, Arctic foxes, musk oxen
- Fun fact: The tundra has one of the shortest growing seasons in the world.
5. Temperate Forest Biome
- Climate: Four distinct seasons, moderate rainfall
- Plants: Oak, maple, ferns, mosses
- Animals: Deer, bears, squirrels, owls
- Fun fact: Many trees lose their leaves in winter to conserve energy.
6. Boreal Forest (Taiga) Biome
- Climate: Long, cold winters, short summers
- Plants: Spruce, fir, and pine trees
- Animals: Wolves, moose, lynx, brown bears
- Fun fact: Boreal forests store massive amounts of carbon, helping regulate the climate.

7. Freshwater Biome
- Climate: Varies by location; includes rivers, lakes, wetlands
- Plants: Cattails, water lilies, algae
- Animals: Trout, beavers, frogs, otters
- Fun fact: Freshwater makes up only about 3% of all the water on Earth.
8. Marine Biome
- Climate: Coastal areas vary, deep oceans stay cold and stable
- Plants: Seaweed, seagrass, phytoplankton
- Animals: Whales, dolphins, sharks, coral
- Fun fact: Oceans cover about 70% of Earthโs surface.
