- 1 tablespoon Saline Solution (must contain boric acid and sodium borate)

- 1/4-1/2 tsp Baking Soda

💡 Note: You cannot use a homemade saline solution. Use a saline solution containing boric acid and sodium borate for optimal results. Avoid using contact lens solution as it is not interchangeable with saline solution in this recipe.
How to Make Saline Solution Slime: Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Mix the Glue and Water
In a bowl, combine 1/2 cup clear glue with 1/2 cup of water. Stir well until completely mixed. This is your base slime mixture.
Step 2: Add Fun Colors and Glitter
Get creative by adding glitter, liquid food coloring, or even foam beads to your mixture! Keep in mind that white glue will create lighter colors, while clear glue will give you richer, jewel-toned shades.
Step 3: Add Baking Soda

This glitter slime recipe does not work at all!! We have tried this 5 different times and the minute we add baking soda it turns to liquid. My child is beyond disappointed as we have wasted glue and glitter. We tried 2 different glues, clear and white. Horrible….thanks for wasting my money.

It’s worth a shot if it it’s PVA glue but there has not been much success with other brand glues, and I am not a paid rep for Elmer’s!
Hopefully you were using Elmer’s washable school glue to start. You also have to make sure your saline solution contains some form of borax/sodium borate/ or boric acid.

I used up&up (Target brand) washable school glue and it worked perfectly!! So much fun! It was really sticky at first so I let it sit and it’s the perfect consistency.

Just made this recipe for the first time and it turned out perfect. My daughter is having a blast and is so happy. This is the 2nd contact solution recipe we have tried and this one is so much better. Now I can’t count the times we attempted to make slime with borax before we discovered the contact solution. We store it in empty play doh containers and the last batch lasted about 2 months. I think to add to the beautiful glittery blue slime we just made, that she just named blue beauty. Lol we will make purple.

Make sure to double check all your measurements and try a 2nd batch. Your solution should be a mixture of sodium borate and boric acid. Did you add the water? Baking soda is used to make the slime thicker, so I am not sure adding more is the solution.

My son did the glitter slime with his 3.5 year old niece. She loved it. I bought the glitter already in the glue. I have not done this project in over 15 yrs. I forgot how gross it felt but boy did it bring back memories with and his siblings.

We just made it this morning and it was brilliant! We used Elmer’s glitter glue (it’s already mixed with the glitter) and it made it that much easier. Once the saline is added it’s much easier to mix with your hands. Also, after you wash your hands, the slime doesn’t stick so much. My boys are delighted and playing with it now. Thank you!
I made this with my daughter and it turned out great. However, it gets a little bit watery when we take it out to play after storing it in a container. Is there a way to keep this from happening?
Just made this with my daughter and it worked really well! Other recipes called for hot water and took longer so I was happy to find this recipe. We used Elmer’s clear glue, some old baking soda from our fridge (I forgot to buy a box when I got the glue…), Target brand saline solution and some water based acrylic paint instead of food dye. My daughter said she heard in a YouTube video that you could use paint to color slime so we tried it. It was our first time making slime so I’m not sure how it should have come out but we got something that is super slimy and my daughter was satisfied 🙂
It may be due to your particular climate. If it’s still staying together in a nice slime, just drain off the water. If you are keeping it in a closed container, condensation will form. You can keep it partially covered and see how that works for you.

Yes you need to check the ingredients to make sure you have the appropriate slime activators! That’s why saline slime is still not borax free.

We like to use 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda. You can squirt a few drops of saline solution on your hands to help with the kneading.
Jus made this with my daughter because in Canada liquid starch is unavailable. t was too sticky, so we added a lot more baking soda and then it worked out fine. The only thing is that my skin was quite irritated after, and a small welt appeared on my wrist. My daughter was fine though so perhaps I am just sensitive to chemicals. However I’m a bit concerned as I want to use this as a party activity for my daughter’s friends. I may just aske them all to wear latex gloves. If you have sensitive skin, I recommend wearing some kind of hand protection while handling the slime!
I can only find saline solution containing sodium chloride. Where do I find the correct one please?
We have the right contact solution but the baking soda does nothing but clump into a ball. Tried it twice. What am I missing? Ours does not look like yours.
It clumps in a ball when added to the mixture? I haven’t experienced that before. This might be a silly question but have you tried sprinkling it over the surface and slowly incorporating it. You also need to add it before the contact solution. I like to add it when I add the food coloring.

Ours turned out great, I had to add a little more baking soda and saline. I was wondering if anyone else has had issues with their hands turning the same color as the food coloring they used?

Did you add a lot of food coloring? We usually don’t have that issue or if it happens initially it just washes up well.
It does depend on the active ingredients in the saline solution. We like to use a mixture of boric acid and sodium borate.
Oh boy! Yes gloves might be best then. This is probably the most sensitive of all the recipes due to the fact that you use it wash contact lenses. Please do what you feel is best. There may be a difference in the products in Canada Vs. US too.

If your saline solution contains just boric acid, you may need to add more. Our solution also contains sodium borate {like liquid starch}. We have a stretchy slime recipe that uses just eye drops containing boric acid.

I literally just got done making this with 18 kids and turned out perfectly! You have to stir it fast and a good bit, we used a whisk.
How long will this last being exposed to air? And will it harden into a fixed shape if I leave it out? Does it shrink?

Awesome recipe!! We made 4 batches with white glue adding different glitter and halloween confetti! I’m not sure why other people are having problems, I used the Elmer’s white school glue, added the water and stirred, added the color and glitter then added the baking soda and mixed, and used the contact solution I already have for my contacts. We made all 4 in less than 15 minutes. Thank you for sharing!
Put your slime into a sink with water in it, and put some soap. Wait for like 10 second stop and start playing with it in the water, take it out the water and keep kneaded! It will stretched like no tomorrow!
I just made a giant batch of this slime. Used my KitchenAid mixer to mix it. It turned out very well.. I used Elmer’s school glue. I put my food coloring in the water before I mixed it with the glue. As it was mixing, I sprinkled the baking soda in and let it mix thoroughly. I used WalMart’s Equate brand saline solution for sensitive eyes. I poured the saline in while it was mixing. I turned the speed up a little as it came together. No problems at all!! Thank you for posting this!!
This recipe is the best one we have tried thus far so not to resort to actual borax…. you must mix vigorously, im talking like making whipped cream by hand type whipping! Also, as noted in the science notes within the recipe it’s super important that the saline solution contain boric acid and sodium borate for the desired slime effect. …

I just made this today with 4 kids and I even used less eye drop solution than the recipe called for (it was a mistake on my part) came out perfect it was really sticky at first but as you play with it and it looses some moisture it becomes just like store bought premise slime. We loved it. A+++

You have to make sure your saline contains the correct ingredients. The reason it worked when you used the detergent is probably because of the sodium borate in it. Does your saline have that ingredient?

I made a batch of slime for the first time today. At first it was too sticky, so I looked up what to do to make it less so. I saw adding baking soda as a suggestion, so I added about a half a teaspoon… and it immediately caused the water and polymer to separate! Now I have a bowl of liquid with a hard, rubbery mass in the middle. Do you know what happened, chemically? And more importantly, do you know how to fix it?
I think I should specify that I used a glue and contact solution (containing borax) to prepare the slime.

RECIPE WAS A WASTE OF MONEY!!! I live in Singapore where Elmer’s glue is three times what it costs in the US. When you write a recipe, please be clearer. No where in your recipe do you state what needs to be in contact solution. I grabbed what was cheapest not knowing I had to read for specific ingredients.

How do i avoid making a watery slime? Which ingredient should I add or reduce?
Or is a slime really supposed to have a watery feel? (As in wets my hands like a wet wipes)
I still enjoyed kneading it though a little wet.
But I also noticed that once it forms (though still a little watery) while kneading it, in just a few hours, it gets more rubbery and breaks if I pull it a little too fast, and in just a few more minutes or hour of playing with it, it gets too rubbery and hard.
How do I make it last for2 months?
This is a great step by step insteuction complete with videos. Mine doesn’t turn out perfectly but I am guessing this is just a difference of brand used in each ingredient.
May I suggest that you put a description of what each ingredient’s purpose is to the slime? This is so we’d know which imgredient to add or reduce if we want to get a particular texture? (E.g., Too watery, too rubbery, easily hardens/breaks, doesn’t stay slimy in just a few hours)

Followed the instructions to a T… did not work as advertised. Added alittle more baking soda and the correct contact solution in small increments. Finally got a decent slime. My 3 year old was satified but my wife and I were not. Other ingredients are much simpler and call for 1/2 TBS of baking soda & 1 1/2 TBS of contact solution.
Yes it’s 1/2 tsp of baking soda and about a tablespoon of contact solution. I made it exactly this way this morning. Make sure to check the active ingredients on your saline solution if you aren’t getting good results.
We are going to try it tomorrow keeping all suggestions in mind.
Saline solution (in the UK) contains .83% sodium chloride.
Contact lens solution (entirely different product) contains boric acid.

Making the slime is fine and is great fun, my child can play with it, however after about 30+mins or storing it for longer periods of time (overnight) in an air tight container at room temp it starts to lose water, when i open the container there is a lot of water surrounding the slime, it also changes consistency and not be as stretchy and tears a lot easier than being elastic as it originally was.
Is it normal to have that much water come out of it? I can just drain the water but is there something I’m doing wrong in the making of it? Not sure what I’m doing wrong to cause this to happen.
I live in Pennsylvania, USA and work with a child care center. Our slime came out great but it weeps liquid when not used. Our liquid comes from the slime itself not from from the top of the lid.This is a double batch in the same container and we have poured off at least 3-5 tablespoons of liquid in the last 24hours! Do you consider this condensation? One of my students recall a video saying it has to be kept in the frig when not in use. Do you do this at all?
I made the recipe with my 3 year old today, it was our first time and it came out great but we did have to add a little more of the lenses cleansing solution. I wish I could post a picture! We are making more tomorrow, it kept her entertained for a long time, so that’s a win on my book. I used the white Elmer’s glue because that’s what we had handy, the color is less bright but still pretty.
I added more saline, several squirts, and I got it to work. Before I did that, it stuck to everything.
I always suggest to quirt a bit on your hands when picking it up for the first time from the bowl. Kneading the slime for a few minutes will greatly reduce the stickiness.
That’s awesome to here! Yes, depending on the solution you could need a bit more but a tablespoon is a good place to start. I suggest squeezing some onto your hands when kneading it to help reduce the stickiness.
On occasion I have had this happen but very rarely. I have several batches that have been sitting out for the last week and this has not happened. I have never kept slime in the fridge. I don’t know what caused it on the rare occasion it happened. The last time it happened was when I was making the monster slime. I made 4 batches all at the same time, put them each in there own container, and one had that issue. It was odd but hasn’t happened since! Let me know if it happens again!

This is not a usual occurrence. It may have to do with climate but I am not sure. I have had this happen once with my monster eyes slime but I also had 3 other containers sitting out with the same recipe and nothing happened to them. What color was the slime?
I made this with my granddaughter and it worked perfectly AND very quickly! We used the Equate brand of Saline Solution for sensitive eyes and it had sodium chloride in it. Worked beautifully and she is one happy little girl.

The slime recipe worked great! We stored it in an airtight container and the next morning it was no longer slime, but had a thin layer of liquid on top and was no longer stretchy. Any suggestions to fix it?

I find that when I make slime it fails anyways but I measured everything quite nicely this time and I don’t know if I’m using the right saline solution but I did measure everything properly and it still didn’t work!

I tried the” Elmers” recipe from their website and got a ball of something half way in between slime and silly putty. Then i found little bin, and tried your recipe, and it worked perfectly the first time. It’s pretty wet though, and keeps leaking water into the bowl that my daughter is using to mix it in and play with it in. Any suggestion why it is so wet? I followed the instructions for the order and about of the ingredients to be mixed together.
Definitely transfer to a clean dry container. I have only had the leaky issue once. How much and what color food coloring did you add?

i only have green water because i think i used the wrong glue and i used homemade saline solution without the boric acid and there is only salt and water in the saline solution.

I have tried two of your recipes and neither have worked at all. Followed exactly as instructed. The fluffy slime and saline slime. I even made my own saline the second time to ensure it was exactly .09%.

Please double check the ingredients in you saline solution and that you are using the other correct ingredients. I would even make a quick demo on FB for you.
Are you using baking SODA or baking POWDER. Powder makes it turn to liquid. If you add alot of baking powder to white glue and add a little bit of contact / saline solution.

Just wanted to say, I’ve made a test-run batch of this using UK-available ingredients (I’ve used The Works PVC glue, bicarb from the baking part of the supermarket, ReNo contact lens solution containing both boric acid and sodium borate, ordinary glitter and gel food dye). It worked really well and I didn’t get the dense bouncy flubber that I got from using another UK recipe with laundry starch! I hope it continues to work ok, as it’s about to be put into use as a party activity!

Our slime worked great! Super fast and super fun! Mix fast and well. We added another 1/2 teaspoon of saline (eye wash) and it formed right up.

If you follow this recipe as written and use the right saline solution, this recipe works perfectly! I quadrupled the amounts and used a hand mixer with a whisk attachment to make a big batch – kids had so much fun coloring and adding glitter!
I have just followed this recipe and I made perfect slime from the recipe and them a break maybe you just did something wrong

I might have missed this, but could you tell me approximately how much slime this recipe yields? I want to make it with my class but, but having all 25 of my kiddos making one recipe each is a whole lot of glue! XD I’m hoping that one batch could be shared between a couple children. Thoughts? Perfection! It’s the same consistency as the prepared slime I bought at Target… and now homemade for cheap. One batch is enough for 2 kids, in my opinion. We used super fine glitter and didn’t even bother with food coloring – works really well.

Idk why so many had issues lol I made two batches with my daughter and they came out great! Make sure you read the ingredients esp the saline solution!

My son and I made several batches of this today and it was perfect. We adjusted and experimented with slightly different measurements of the ingredients and it was fun to see how it changed the sliminess/thickness of the slime. However, when we stopped playing with it, stored it, and it rested, so much water came out of it. Every batch, regardless of the adjusted measurements, oozed water. At least 2-3 T, possibly more. It was a little frustrating because we wanted to keep it for longer. Any ideas?
Hi! Did you use contact solution or saline solution? Contact solution will make a weepier slime! I have not had this issue with actual saline solution. We like target brand for sensitive eyes. Feel free to email me anytime sarah@littlebinsforlittlehands.com

This slime sucks. WAY too much water and now my kids are crying!! I’m using the same contact solution that I have made MANY other slimes with. Will not be using this recipe again!

Using the recommended supplies and following the recipe should have given you stretchy slime, but I would be happy to help. Did you watch the start to finish video. You may have needed different measurements then you have previously used. I also don’t recommend contact solution. Happy to help!

To the many commenters who said it did not work, perhaps the fault is with you giving up too quickly! I say that because I thought it didn’t work at first either. I was about to have a class of disappointed kiddos, but we added more baking soda and contact solution (all I had at the moment!) and BAM! It worked perfectly! Kneading it really helped it get the perfect slime consistency. My students left school VERY happy!

We love this recipe!!! We’ve made it over and over again!!! I followed the instructions and bought saline that had boric acid in it and we’ve had great slime! I love that you can make it as gooey or non-gooey as you want:)

Love making slime with all ages! My grandnephew did not want to touch it so we made him the photographer and he was happy with that. We had success making the clear slime with glitter; also the marshmallow fluff/powdered sugar fluff. Thank you for all the fun ideas.

We made 3 batches of slime at once! I used the Great Value off brand eye drops and I found I did need to add a little more to my slim. I just squeezed some solution on my hands and needed the slime.
Great! Eye drops alone generally just have boric acid in them, so you do need more! Yay!

I made a version with water and without. The version with water was liquidy and the one without was perfect. Why was that?

Fantastic recipe. Worked the first time for us! I made sure to tell my husband exactly what to look for in contact lens solution when I sent him to pick some up, and we read through the directions twice before even attempting. We have a dusky blue, glittery slime that has entertained my child for over an hour!

This recipe is great! We checked our saline before we started. It had both ingredients, we just had to keep adding a bit more for our slime to form. My 7 yr old is thrilled! I can’t wait to make the fluffy slime with her! Thank you!
This worked perfectly for us. we used elmers glow in the dark glue and equated multipurpose solution for soft contacts
I think it will be helpful to list a few saline solution brand that works for the recipe. I tried 2 solutions with my daughter and neither had worked so far. WE will try target saline solution next but it will be great to know not all of them work even if it contains boric acid and sodium borate.
