Explore momentum, energy transfer, and Newton’s Laws with a simple marble science activity.
Have you ever noticed what happens when one marble rolls into a line of other marbles? The marble at the opposite end suddenly moves away while the others seem to stay almost still. It may look like magic, but it’s actually a fascinating example of physics in action!
This marble momentum activity is a hands-on way for kids to investigate how energy moves through objects. Using only a few marbles and a simple track, children can make predictions, observe collisions, and discover how motion transfers from one object to another.

Science Concepts
Momentum is an important concept in physics and helps explain how objects move and interact. This activity also connects to kinetic energy, force and motion, and Newton’s Laws of Motion.

What Is Momentum?
Momentum is the tendency of a moving object to keep moving. Objects gain momentum when they are in motion.
When a moving object collides with another object, momentum can be transferred. This transfer affects how both objects move after the collision.
Marbles provide an easy way to observe momentum because their motion is readily visible and measurable. In this activity, you’ll see momentum travel through a line of marbles in a surprising way.
Marble Momentum Activity
Supplies
- 8–10 marbles
- Ruler, groove, track, or book spine
- Marble Momentum worksheet (below, optional)
Instructions
STEP 1: Line up several marbles in a row along a ruler, groove, or track.
STEP 2: Place one marble a short distance away from the line.

STEP 3: Roll the marble into the line of marbles.
STEP 4: Watch carefully to see what happens to the marble on the opposite end.

STEP 5: Repeat the activity using two marbles instead of one.
STEP 6: Try again using three marbles and compare your observations.
STEP 7: Record your results on the observation sheet.
How Does The Marble Momentum Activity Work?
When the moving marble rolls into the line, it has momentum because it is already in motion.
As the marble collides with the others, its momentum and kinetic energy transfer through the row. Instead of all the marbles scattering, the energy travels through the line and causes the marble at the opposite end to move.
You may notice that when one marble rolls into the row, one marble moves out. When two marbles roll into the row, two marbles move out. When three marbles roll into the row, three marbles move out.
The marbles in the middle help transfer the energy through the system.

Think Like A Scientist
Scientists ask questions, make predictions, and test ideas. You can learn more about the scientific method for kids here.
Try changing one variable at a time and observe what happens.
Ask questions such as:
- What happens if I use more marbles?
- What happens if I roll the marble faster?
- What happens if I use two or three marbles?
- Does the length of the marble line matter?
- What happens if I use larger marbles?
💡 Record your observations and look for patterns. Can you explain why the marbles move the way they do?
