Fun Pumpkin Math Activities

Here are seven creative ways to practice math with pumpkins:

1. Count Pumpkin Seeds

After carving or opening a pumpkin, have kids count the seeds inside. Great for reinforcing counting skills and introducing the concept of one-to-one correspondence (matching numbers to objects).

2. Measuring Pumpkin Circumference

Use a soft measuring tape or a piece of string to measure the pumpkin’s circumference (distance around). Measure and compare pumpkins of different sizes and discuss which one has a larger or smaller circumference.

3. Estimate and Weigh Pumpkins

Place the pumpkin on a child-friendly scale and let kids estimate its weight before revealing it. It is a fun way to introduce estimation and comparison of weight.

4. Sort Pumpkins by Size

Provide a variety of small, medium, and large pumpkins. Have kids sort them into different groups based on size. This activity helps with understanding the concept of size and ordering objects.

5. Pumpkin Patterns

Use pumpkin stickers, paint, or even different-colored markers to create patterns on the pumpkin’s surface. For example, you could start a simple ABAB pattern (e.g., orange-green-orange-green) and ask kids to continue the pattern.

6. Pumpkin Shape Hunt

Cut out various shapes (e.g., circles, triangles, squares) from colored paper. Hide these shapes around the pumpkin patch or yard. Have the child find the shapes and match them to corresponding shapes drawn on a pumpkin or a poster board. See more shape activities for preschoolers.

7. Pumpkin Seed Graph

Create a simple graph on paper with categories like “Big Seeds” and “Small Seeds.” As kids count pumpkin seeds, have them place each seed in the appropriate category on the graph.

8. Pumpkin Pie Fractions

Whip up a batch of pumpkin playdough and add these free pumpkin pie fraction cards for a fantastic early math lesson. Don’t want to use playdough? Turn them into fraction puzzles!
