Pumpkin Math (with free Pumpkin Worksheets)

Pumpkins really do make awesome tools for hands-on learning. There are so many awesome pumpkin activities you can try with even one small pumpkin. This makes learning especially fun during the fall season when you can use a trip to the pumpkin patch to begin it all. Our measuring activity with pumpkin worksheets is a simple way to bring a little math into the season, and you can even do it at the pumpkin patch!

PUMPKIN MATH

We know how much fun pumpkins can be during the fall season and we all love a trip to the pumpkin patch to pick out our favorite pumpkin, get lost in the corn maze and enjoy some pumpkin goodies! You can also enjoy hands-on learning with this simple to set up pumpkin measuring activity for kindergarten and preschool.

PUMPKIN ACTIVITIES

What about setting up a pumpkin investigation tray while you are carving for even more science exploration.

Make sure to save your carved pumpkin to investigate the rotting process like our Pumpkin Jack experiment! There are so many great things to do with even just one pumpkin!

PUMPKIN MATH ACTIVITIES

YOU WILL NEED:

  • Pick your pumpkin or pumpkins, big or small.
  • String
  • Tape measure
  • Rulers
  • Scale
  • Colored pencils
  • Printable Pumpkin Math Worksheets

MATH ACTIVITY 1: CIRCUMFERENCE OF PUMPKIN

Use a piece of string to find the circumference or distance around your pumpkin.  Make sure to predict the measurement first!

First, my son used the string to measure around the pumpkin and then he laid it out again a yard stick. Depending on how big your pumpkin is, you may need to use a tape measure instead. Alternatively, you can use a soft tape measure.

MATH ACTIVITY 2: WEIGHING PUMPKINS

Use a kitchen scale or a regular scale to weigh your pumpkins.  Make sure to predict the weight before you begin.

We have a small kitchen scale that we weighed our pumpkins on. Some pumpkins get pretty big and may be difficult to lift but you can also try this activity with mini pumpkins.

MATH ACTIVITY 3: OBSERVE YOUR PUMPKIN

Another great part of this pumpkin STEM project is to observe your pumpkin! Check out the color, the markings, the stem, and whatever else you can see. Maybe one side is bumpy or flat. Did you see the cool pumpkin we had?

PUMPKIN MATH WORKSHEETS

I created two different free printable pumpkin math worksheets. The first math worksheet you can use if you have a single pumpkin.  Perfect for when you are getting ready to carve out a pumpkin.

The second worksheet is for comparing a group of different pumpkins. Big or small, there are plenty of opportunities for hands-on math learning!

MORE MEASURING IDEAS

Alternatively, you can take a soft measuring tape with you out to the pumpkin patch and take measurements there to explore circumference.

Talk about the different pumpkins you see and any unusual features the pumpkins may have. Learning doesn’t have to be structured with a worksheet! It can happen anywhere and you can really take this measuring pumpkins math activity with you!

There are any number of ways you can enjoy this activity from pointing out big and little pumpkins with toddlers to comparing similar sized pumpkins using the worksheets with preschoolers!
