WINTER ACTIVITIES WITH SNOW

Kids will love trying out this homemade paint recipe and creating their colored castles in snow. A long snowy winter offers some neat activities to try and a good reason to get the kids outdoors for creative play!

Go ahead and collect some of that freshly fallen snow to also make super easy snow cream! If you don’t have any snow, try our homemade ice cream in a bag instead. Perfect for any hot or cold day all year round!

Snow Castles 

Supplies:

  • Water
  • Food coloring
  • Plastic squeeze bottles (condiment bottles) 
  • Plastic cups 
  • Tray
  • Scoop 
  • Fresh snow 

HOW TO BUILD AN ICE CASTLE

STEP 1. Add water to the squeeze bottles. 

STEP 2. Drop a few drops of desired food coloring into each bottle. Close the bottle and shake well.

STEP 3. Scoop fresh snow into a tray. 

STEP 4. Add the fresh snow to each cup. Pack the snow down with your hands (while wearing waterproof gloves) or a scoop.

STEP 5. Squeeze colored water into the cup. Use one color for each cup of snow, or use multiple colors.

For this project, we used at least two colors for each cup of snow. You’ll want to add enough for the color to seep through the ice. You can insert the tip of the bottle into the snow to help it squirt down towards the bottom if desired.

STEP 6. Turn the cup of colored snow over onto the snow covered ground and lift the cup up carefully, creating a snow castle! Repeat with more cups of colored snow.
