Soap Foam Recipe

Did you know that homemade sensory play materials like this fluffy soap foam are fantastic for helping young kids develop an awareness of their senses?

Soap foam is super fun to add to a water table!

You don’t need expensive play materials to connect with your kiddos! They will love helping you whip up sensory foam in the kitchen. Common household supplies make this an easy kids’ activity for indoor or outdoor play.

Recommended Age: Toddlers and preschoolers will love this fluffy foam.

💡Substitute the dish soap for tear-free soap if using with toddlers and younger kids!

Sensory Foam Ingredients:

  • 1.5 cups water
  • ¼ cup of dish soap
  • Lots of food coloring
  • Large bowl
  • Electric Beaters or whisks
  • Essential oils or scents [optional]

How to Make Soap Foam

💡 Whip up another batch of soap foam in a different color and mix the two.

Watch the video:

STEP 1: First, gently mix water, soap, and food coloring in a bowl so they combine. You will need extra food coloring, even though it may appear quite dark at first. I could have added more here!

STEP 2: Then grab the beaters and mix on high, with the bowl tipped, until you get bubbles going. Beat for 2 minutes to get really tight bubbles!

💡 Mixing Tip: The tighter the bubbles, the longer the play will last, but you can also re-whip the soap foam!

STEP 3: Transfer foam to a play tray or shallow container.

STEP 4:  Add play tools and theme accessories. For example…

  • Set up a treasure hunt with plastic or acrylic jewels.
  • Add a favorite theme with plastic figures.
  • Add foam letters or numbers for an early learning activity.
  • Make an ocean theme like we did below!

How To Clean Up Soap Foam

This sensory foam is perfect for an afternoon of play! You can lay down a shower curtain or tablecloth under the container to minimize bubbles everywhere! If it’s a nice day, take it outside and it won’t matter if you get bubbles everywhere.

What about the bathtub? Wouldn’t this bubbly foam be fun to add (do not try to make in the tub because electricity and water do NOT mix) When you are done with your soap foam, wash it down the drain!
