Supplies:

  • Paper (cardstock or heavyweight is best)
  • Glue
  • Paint Brush
  • Tissue Paper Squares (in various fall colors: red, orange, yellow, brown)
  • Fall Tree Template (see below)

Instructions:

STEP 1: To create the background download and print the fall tree template below, cut it, and glue it to a cardstock or heavyweight paper sheet. Optionally, you can paint the paper first to create a sky.

💡 If you do not want to print anything, you can also cut tree trunks out of brown paper.

STEP 2: Once the background is dry, apply a layer of glue on the areas where the tree will be. Children can use a paintbrush to spread the glue, making placing the tissue paper squares easier.

STEP 3: Place tissue paper squares on the glued areas. Encourage the children to use different colors to represent the changing leaves of fall.

STEP 4: To add more depth to the tree, repeat the process with a second layer of glue and tissue paper squares. This gives the tree a fuller look and allows kids to experiment with overlapping colors.

STEP 5: Place small glue dots randomly on the background paper. Crinkle small pieces of tissue paper and stick them onto the glue dots. These represent the falling leaves of autumn.

STEP 6: Let the craft dry completely before displaying it. The finished product can be hung up on walls, displayed on bulletin boards, or taken home to show off to family members.

Extension Activities

Add these fun nature activities to go along with this tissue paper fall tree craft.

  • Fall Nature Walk: Take the kids on a nature walk to collect real fall leaves. In the classroom, compare the real leaves with the tissue paper leaves they made. This helps them understand the textures and colors found in nature.
  • Leaf Identification: Use the collected leaves to teach kids about different types of trees. Create a matching game where children match real leaves with pictures or drawings of trees. This can be a fun introduction to tree species like oak, maple, and birch.
  • Leaf Symmetry: Introduce the concept of symmetry by folding real leaves in half and comparing them to the symmetrical designs they can create with tissue paper. This ties into both math and art by exploring geometric concepts and patterns. Use our free leaf templates, too!
  • Tree Life Cycle: Discuss the life cycle of a tree, from seed to mature tree, and how it changes with the seasons. You can create a simple diagram that the children can follow or recreate in their journals. Use our pine tree life cycle activity [here].
  • Wind Experiment: Explore the science of wind and how it affects leaves. Use a small fan or blow on the tissue paper leaves to see how they move. Discuss how wind helps in seed dispersal and leaf movement.
  • Story Time: Pair this craft with a fall-themed book. Some excellent choices are “Leaf Man” by Lois Ehlert or “Fletcher and the Falling Leaves” by Julia Rawlinson. After reading, discuss the story and how it relates to the changes in nature during the fall.
