Hatching Dino Eggs Activity

Let’s get right to making our hatching dinosaur eggs for a super cool dinosaur science activity! Head to the kitchen, open the pantry and be prepared to get some mixing going. It’s a tad messy, but oh so fun to make this oobleck-like mixture and turn it into dino eggs!

This dinosaur science activity asks the question: What happens when an acid and a base are mixed together? What different states of matter can you observe?

Read more about the science behind baking soda and vinegar experiments.

YOU WILL NEED:

  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Water
  • Plastic wrap (optional)
  • Food coloring
  • Small plastic dinosaurs
  • Squirt bottle, eyedropper, or baster

How to Make Dinosaur Eggs

Make sure to set up this activity ahead of time as you will need to pop the dinosaur eggs into the freezer before they are ready to hatch. You can also make a batch of these frozen dino eggs too and use them the next day for a fun ice melt activity!

STEP 1: Start by slowly adding water to a good load of baking soda. You want to add just enough until you get a crumbly but pack-able dough. It shouldn’t be runny or soupy. You can divide the baking soda and water mixture into bowls and color each one separately with food coloring. See below.

Hint: We had fun with multi colors but it’s just an option. Plain or just one color dino egg will be fun too!

STEP 2: Now, here’s how to turn the baking soda mixture into dinosaur eggs! Pack the mixture around your plastic dinosaurs. You can use plastic cling wrap to help keep the shape if needed.

Hint: If your dinosaurs are small enough, you may be able to use large plastic Easter eggs to mold the dinosaur eggs.

Check out our surprise eggs to see how we did that!

STEP 3: Place your dinosaur eggs in the freezer for as long as you like. The more frozen the eggs are, the longer it will take the kids to melt them!

STEP 4: Add the dinosaur eggs to a large, deep dish or bucket and set out a bowl of vinegar! Let the kids squirt the baking soda eggs and watch them fizz until the dinosaurs are hatched!

Make sure to have extra vinegar handy. We buy the gallon jugs! Kids can even drop one into a cup filled with vinegar to watch the eruption!

Baking Soda and Vinegar at Home or in the Classroom

Kids will love testing and retesting this simple chemical reaction, so I always recommend having extra vinegar. If you are working with a group of kids, use bowls and one dino egg each!

Don’t like the smell of vinegar? Try this activity with lemon juice and baking soda instead! Since lemon juice is also an acid, it produces a chemical reaction when combined with baking soda. Check out our lemon volcanoes!

Make it a sensory activity and give the dinosaurs a bath afterward. Break out the old toothbrushes, and scrub them clean!

What Happens When You Mix Baking Soda and Vinegar?

The science behind these hatching dinosaur eggs is all about the baking soda, vinegar, and the fizzy bubbles that result!

When the acid (vinegar) and the base (baking soda) mix together,  a chemical reaction happens. The baking soda and vinegar are used to make a new substance, a gas called carbon dioxide. The fizzing, bubbling action you can see and even feel if you put your hand close enough is the gas!

All three states of matter are present: liquid (vinegar), solid (baking soda), and gas (carbon dioxide). Learn more about states of matter.
