How To Make Paint

TIP: Which flour is used to make paint? We have used plain white flour for our paint recipe. But you could use whatever you have on hand. You may need to adjust the amount of water though to get the paint consistency right.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups salt
  • 2 cups hot water
  • 2 cups flour
  • Water-soluble food coloring

TIP: Painting with toddlers? Add the paint to empty squeeze bottles for a fun art activity for little ones. If the paint is too thick to squeeze out easily, add a little more water. Good thing is the paint will dry quickly!

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will flour paint last?

Flour paint will not keep for a long time like acrylic paint. We suggest that you make enough for your art activity and then discard what is left. If you do want to use it again after painting, store it in the refrigerator for up to a week. Stir well before using again as the flour and water will separate. If the paint thickens, you can add a small amount of water and stir well.

Can flour paint be used on all surfaces, and how does it dry?

Flour paint works well on a variety of surfaces such as paper, cardboard, and wood. It won’t adhere well to non-porous surfaces like plastic or metal. Depending on the thickness of the paint layer and the humidity of the environment, it can take a few hours to overnight to fully dry. Thicker applications may take longer to dry completely.

How do you clean up flour paint after an art session?

Cleaning up flour paint is easy and can be done with water. While the paint is still wet, use warm, soapy water to wash brushes, containers, and any other tools. For dried paint on surfaces, soaking and scrubbing with soapy water should remove the paint. It is advisable to clean up immediately after the painting session to prevent the paint from drying and becoming harder to remove.
