HOW DO SNOWFLAKES FORM?

In winter, the air can get very cold — and it will get chillier the higher you go above the ground.

A snowflake begins to form when an extremely cold water droplet freezes onto a pollen or dust particle in the sky.
This creates an ice crystal. As the ice crystal falls to the ground, water vapor freezes onto the primary crystal, building new crystals – the six arms of the snowflake.

The beautiful six-sided structure of snowflakes comes from the hexagonal lattice structure of ice. When water freezes, the molecules connect together and always form hexagons. As more molecules are added, they form branches on each of the six sides.
