A BIT OF SLIME SCIENCE

What’s the science behind the slime? The borate ions in the slime activator  {sodium borate, borax powder, or boric acid} mixes with the PVA {polyvinyl-acetate} glue and forms this cool stretchy substance. This is called cross linking!

The glue is a polymer and is made up of long, repeating, and identical strands or molecules. These molecules with flow past one another keeping the glue in a liquid state.

When you add the borate ions to the mixture, it starts to connect these long strands together. They begin to tangle and mix until the substance is less like the liquid you started with and is thicker and rubberier like slime!

Picture the difference between wet spaghetti and leftover spaghetti the next day. As the slime forms the tangled molecule strands are much like the clump of spaghetti!

NOTE: Fluffy slime gets its added fluff from the foam shaving cream. Can you figure out why? Can you also figure out why fluffy slime loses its fluff over time?

OUR BASIC SLIME RECIPES

All of our holiday, seasonal, and everyday theme slime use one of our basic slime recipes that are super easy to make! We make slime all the time, and these have become our go-to favorite slime making recipes.

Here we use our fluffy slime recipe with saline solution.

RAINBOW FLUFFY SLIME RECIPE

We made 1/2 batches of our basic fluffy slime in red/pink, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. We also made a plain white batch for a cloud.

FLUFFY SLIME INGREDIENTS

  • 1/4 cup White Washable PVA School Glue
  • 1 1/2 cups Foam Shaving Cream
  • 1/2 tbsp Saline Solution
  • 1/4 tsp Baking Soda
  • Food coloring

HOW TO MAKE RAINBOW FLUFFY SLIME

STEP 1:  Measure and add 1 1/2 generous cups of foam shaving cream to a large mixing bowl.

STEP 2:  Next, add food coloring and gently stir to mix color.

What are the colors of the rainbow?

STEP 3:  Measure and add white glue to your bowl.  Then gently stir to combine.

STEP 4:  Add 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda to the mixture and gently stir.

STEP 5:  Lastly, measure out 1/2 tablespoon of saline solution or contact solution (must contain borate ions) and add to bowl.

STEP 6:  Gently stir the mixture to activate the slime. It will begin to pull away from sides and bottom of bowl. Then pick up your slime and knead it until smooth and stretchy and no longer sticky.

SLIME TIP: Squeeze a few drops of saline solution on your hands before picking up your slime makes it stick less while you knead it. Kneading it is important to improving the consistency of the slime.

Don’t go crazy adding more saline solution until you have spent some time kneading it. This will reduce the stickiness. If you add too much saline initially, you will end up with rubbery slime.

STORING YOUR FLUFFY SLIME

I get a lot of questions regarding how do I store my slime. Usually we use a reusable container either plastic or glass. If you keep your slime clean it will last for several weeks. And…if you forget to store your slime in a container, it does actually last a few days uncovered. If the top gets crusty just fold it into itself.

If you want to send kids home with a bit of slime from a camp, party, or classroom project, I would suggest packages of reusable containers from the dollar store. For large groups we have used condiment containers as seen here.

NOTE: Fluffy slime stores just fine although it loses it’s fluffiness over time. We have found that it is still an awesome slime for play even after the fluff is gone. The slime remains thick and stretchy and soft!
