Watercolor Snowflakes
Simple Winter Painting Activity for Kids
Winter brings many opportunities for both indoor and outdoor play! When the weather is really nasty, try some simple painting ideas to create new wall art! There are so many kinds of Winter activities for kids to try from science to sensory play. We enjoyed our tape resist snowflake painting, so I thought we would try our watercolors! This Winter painting activity is so simple and fun. Plus we paired it with a great Winter snowflake book, The Little Snowflake by Steve Metzger.
Supplies Needed:
- heavy card stock paper
- hot glue gun and glue {adult use only!}
- watercolors and brushes
- salt and small spoon or measuring spoon
- book {optional}
So quick and simple! While you  {adult} create the snowflakes on the paper, talk about how each snowflake is different from the next, but they all have six sides. Try to create unique snowflakes!
I used our hot glue gun to make snowflakes on heavy white paper {scrapbook weight}. I set out watercolors and salt. Together we looked through the book, and then we created these watercolor snowflakes paintings. The hot glue provided a different kind of resist painting like our painter’s tape resist snowflake paintings. For added effect, we sprinkled salt on our watercolor snowflakes paintings.Â
The salt creates a fun texture for these watercolor snowflakes as the crystals pull color away leaving lighter spots. This process is simple and easy and entertaining even for active children on an indoor day! We painted our watercolor snowflakes bright colors to brighten our day!
