Learn the apple life cycle from seed to tree, flower, fruit, and back to seed with simple printable activities for kids.
This fall life science activity is a great way to help students visualize how an apple tree grows, produces fruit, and begins the cycle again.

Apple Life Cycle
Field: Life Science
Grades: K–3
Concepts: Life cycles, plant growth, seeds, flowers, pollination, fruit development
The apple life cycle begins with a seed and continues as the plant grows, matures, flowers, and produces fruit.
A simple sequence is: Seed → Sprout → Sapling → Tree → Flower → Fruit → Seeds
🔎 The important idea is that the cycle repeats. The fruit contains seeds that can begin a new generation of apple trees.

Stages of the Apple Life Cycle
- Seed: The cycle begins with a seed found inside an apple.
- Sprout: When the seed begins to grow, roots develop below the soil and a small shoot pushes upward.
- Sapling: The young tree continues growing taller and stronger as it develops into a sapling.
- Mature Tree: Once it matures, the tree can produce blossoms.
- Flower: Apple blossoms attract pollinators such as bees.
- Fruit: After pollination, fruit begins to develop. Apples grow and ripen on the tree.
- Seeds Again: Inside the mature apple are seeds that can begin the cycle again.

Apple Life Cycle Activity
One easy way to use the printable is to have students put the life cycle stages in order.
🔎 Start with: Seed → Sprout → Sapling → Tree → Flower → Fruit
💡 Then ask: What comes next?
👉 The answer is seeds again, because the fruit contains the seeds that can start a new plant.
💡 That final connection is what turns a growth sequence into a true life cycle.
How Are Apples Formed?
Apples develop after flowers are pollinated.
The flowers bloom on a mature apple tree, pollinators move pollen between blossoms, and the fertilized flower begins developing into fruit.
🔎 As the apple grows, seeds develop inside. This connects the flower stage, fruit stage, and the next generation of seeds.
How Is the Apple Life Cycle Different From Apple Growth?
These two topics are closely related, but it helps to teach them separately.
👉 For a closer look at the growth sequence, try the How Do Apples Grow? Printable Apple Growth Activity.
Apple Tree Through the Seasons
Apple trees also change throughout the year.
- Spring: The tree produces new leaves and blossoms.
- Summer: Fruit begins to develop and grow.
- Fall: Apples ripen and are ready to harvest.
- Winter: The tree becomes dormant.
🔎 Use the printable seasonal activity to compare what changes and what stays the same throughout the year.

Connect the Life Cycle to Seeds
Apples are a great way to connect life cycles with seed investigations. Cut open an apple and look at the seeds inside. Then ask:
- How many seeds are there?
- Are all the seeds the same size?
- What would happen if one of these seeds grew?
- How does the seed connect back to the beginning of the life cycle?
👉 You can extend the lesson with your How Many Seeds? Investigation and compare apples with other fall fruits.

Connect to Seed Dispersal
Seeds need a way to move away from the parent plant. Apple seeds are protected inside fleshy fruit, and animals can help move those seeds when they eat the fruit.
👉 This is a good way to connect the apple life cycle to a Seed Dispersal Activity and compare different ways seeds travel.
