Supplies at a Glance
Most projects use just a few simple supplies:
- Washable paint (tempera or watercolor)
- Marbles or small balls
- Bubble wrap
- Apples, pumpkins, corn cobs, pinecones, and real leaves
- Fabric scraps, salt, glue, and aluminum foil
- Crayons, paper, trays, or boxes for mess control
💡 Teacher Tip: Set up stations with materials grouped together. This makes transitions smoother for larger groups.
Apple Process Art
Apples are a classic fall theme and perfect for process art. These projects explore motion (rolling marbles), texture (bubble wrap stamping), and simple chemistry (fizzing reactions). Kids also practice observation, symmetry, and repetition — all key elements of art.

Apple Marble Painting
Roll paint-covered marbles across apple-shaped cutouts. Each design is different! Grab our apple templates here.
- Ages: Preschool–Grade 2
- Learning Connection: Motion and cause/effect.

Bubble Wrap Apple Prints
Press bubble wrap with paint onto apple shapes for fun textures.
- Ages: Preschool–Grade 3
- Teacher Tip: Tape bubble wrap to cardboard for easy stamping.
Apple Printing & Stamping
Cut apples in half, dip them in paint, and stamp them onto paper.

Baking Soda and Vinegar Apple Art
“Paint” with baking soda paste, then drop vinegar for a fizzy effect.
- Ages: K–Grade 5
- Learning Connection: Chemistry + art = STEAM!
Pumpkin Process Art
These activities highlight texture, pattern, and shape while connecting to science through fizzing chemical reactions. A Kusama-inspired project also introduces kids to famous artists and the element of art: pattern.
Bubble Wrap Pumpkin Prints
Use bubble wrap stamping to create textured pumpkins.
- Ages: Preschool–Grade 3
Baking Soda and Vinegar Pumpkin Art
Fizzing paint inside pumpkin outlines—kids never tire of this!
- Ages: K–Grade 5
- Teacher Tip: Use trays to contain the fizzing mess.
Kusama-Inspired Pumpkin Art
Cover pumpkin shapes in bold polka dots, inspired by artist Yayoi Kusama.

- Learning Connection: Introduces famous artists and pattern play.
Fabric Pumpkin Texture Art
Glue and layer fabric scraps on pumpkin cutouts.
- Ages: Preschool–Grade 4
- Learning Connection: Explore textile textures and collage.
Leaf Process Art
Fall leaves are rich in texture and color, making them a natural fit for process art. These activities encourage kids to experiment with absorption (salt painting), texture (rubbings), resist techniques (crayon + watercolor), and movement (marble painting). They also tie in elements of art such as line, shape, and color blending.
Leaf Marble Painting
Roll marbles dipped in fall colors over leaf cutouts.
- Ages: Preschool–Grade 2
Salad Spinner Leaf Art
Spin-painted leaves inside a salad spinner for splatter effects. Use any of our free leaf templates here or cut out your own leaf shapes!
- Ages: Preschool–Grade 3
- Teacher Tip: Keep one salad spinner just for art.

Leaf Salt Painting Art
Outline leaves in glue, sprinkle salt, and paint over with watercolor.
- Ages: K–Grade 4
- Learning Connection: Color mixing and absorption.
Leaf Crayon Resist
Create crayon rubbings of real leaves, then paint over them. The wax resists paint beautifully.
- Ages: Preschool–Grade 3
Painted Leaf Prints (Leaf Printmaking)
Brush paint onto real leaves and press them onto paper to reveal beautiful textures and vein patterns.
- Ages: Preschool–Grade 4
- Learning Connection: Introduces printmaking as an art technique and highlights leaf vein structures in science.
Leaf Rubbings with Aluminum Foil
Rub leaves under foil and color over with markers or paint. Shiny and textured!
- Ages: Grades 1–5
- Learning Connection: Explore texture in unexpected materials.
More Fall Process Art
Nature offers plenty of inspiration beyond apples, pumpkins, and leaves. Corn and pinecones provide unique textures and shapes, while painting with these natural materials connects kids to science concepts like plant structure and cause/effect, as well as elements of art such as form and texture.
Corn Painting
Roll or stamp paint-covered corn cobs onto paper for amazing kernel textures.
- Ages: Preschool–Grade 3

Pinecone Painting
Dip pinecones in paint and roll across paper—or use them as brushes.
- Ages: Preschool–Grade 4
- Teacher Tip: Works well outdoors for easy cleanup.
💡 Extension Idea: Use finished apple, pumpkin, and leaf cutouts to make a classroom bulletin board or a collaborative fall mural.
