FIZZY HEARTS
With this Valentine’s science idea, make baking soda paint and enjoy a fizzing reaction and a STEAM project. This Valentine’s baking soda vinegar experiment is perfect for exploring states of matter and chemical reactions with common kitchen ingredients!

SUPPLIES:
- Heart template (see below)
- Scissors
- Acrylic paint
- Baking Soda
- Vinegar
- Squirt bottle or eye dropper
INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1: Print the heart template and cut it out.
Step 2: Mix acrylic paint and baking soda. You can do more than one heart, color, or even mix colors.
Step 3: Paint the heart with the mixed paint. Make sure to spread the paint on in a thick layer for best fizzy results.
Step 4: Let it dry, and then spray or drop the vinegar and watch chemistry in action!
BAKING SODA AND VINEGAR REACTION
This fizzy heart activity is a fantastic way to explore chemical reactions and the states of matter in action! It demonstrates how a solid (baking soda) and a liquid (vinegar) can react to form something entirely new—a gas.
Here’s how it works: when vinegar, an acid, combines with baking soda, a base, it reacts to produce carbon dioxide gas. The fizzy, bubbling action you see is the carbon dioxide being released! This experiment is an excellent example of how chemical reactions can create exciting changes. All three states of matter are present: the liquid vinegar, the solid baking soda, and the gas (carbon dioxide) produced during the reaction.
