Looking for a fun way to teachย the parts of a plant cell? This playdoughย plant cell modelย project is a hands-on biology activity perfect for elementary and middle school science lessons.ย

Playdough Plant Cell Model for Kids
Using playdough or clay, kids can build a model of a cell, explore various organelles, and understand how they function. Whether in a classroom setting or at home with older siblings, this activity brings science to life!

Grade Level Recommendations
- Grades 4-5:ย Introduceย plant cell modelsย and compare them to anย animal cell model.
- Grades 6-8: Dive deeper into the cellโs organelles, their functions, and why plant cells are unique.
Materials Needed
💡You can make homemade no-cook playdough or use store-bought playdough for easy prep.
- Play-doh, playdough, modeling clay, or air dry clay in different colors
- Toothpicks and little flags for labels
- Construction paper or a piece of paper for a cell diagram
- Pipe cleaners, beads, or craft foam for texture (optional)
- Scissors for cutting shapes
Building a Playdough Plant Cell Model
Grab a variety of playdough colors, download the free plant cell printable below, and let’s gets started!
🔎 Use your extra playdough to make a playdough earth layers model or animal cell model.
Create the Playdough Cell Wall & Cell Membrane
- Roll out green play dough to form the cell wall (provides structure and protection).
- Inside the cell wall, add a yellow layer for the cell membrane (controls what enters and exits).
Make the Cytoplasm
- Fill the inside of your model withย yellow playdoughย to represent theย cytoplasm, the jelly-like substance that supports theย cellโs organelles.

Add the Key Organelles
| Organelle | How to Make It |
|---|---|
| Nucleus | Red playdough ball with a small pink nucleolus inside |
| Ribosomes | Small beads or tiny playdough dots |
| Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum | Blue squiggly playdough with beads to show ribosomes |
| Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum | Light blue squiggles without ribosomes |
| Golgi Apparatus | Purple folded playdough (packages proteins) |
| Mitochondria | Green oval-shaped playdough with ridges (the powerhouse of the cell) |
| Chloroplast | Green playdough ovals with little dots for chlorophyll |
| Vacuole | Large blue blobโstores water, nutrients, and waste |

Plant Cell Science
A plant cell model helps kids understand how cells function. The nucleus controls the cell, the mitochondria provide energy, and the chloroplasts make food through photosynthesis. Unlike animal cells, plant cells have a cell wall for support and a large vacuole to store water.
