Grade Level Recommendations

  • Grades 4-5:ย Introduceย plant cell modelsย and compare them to anย animal cell model.
  • Grades 6-8: Dive deeper into the cellโ€™s organelles, their functions, and why plant cells are unique.

Materials Needed

💡You can make homemade no-cook playdough or use store-bought playdough for easy prep.

  • Play-doh, playdough, modeling clay, or air dry clay in different colors
  • Toothpicks and little flags for labels
  • Construction paper or a piece of paper for a cell diagram
  • Pipe cleanersbeads, or craft foam for texture (optional)
  • Scissors for cutting shapes

🔎 Use your extra playdough to make a playdough earth layers model or animal cell model.

Create the Playdough Cell Wall & Cell Membrane

  • Roll out green play dough to form the cell wall (provides structure and protection).
  • Inside the cell wall, add a yellow layer for the cell membrane (controls what enters and exits).

Make the Cytoplasm

  • Fill the inside of your model withย yellow playdoughย to represent theย cytoplasm, the jelly-like substance that supports theย cellโ€™s organelles.

Plant Cell Science

A plant cell model helps kids understand how cells function. The nucleus controls the cell, the mitochondria provide energy, and the chloroplasts make food through photosynthesis. Unlike animal cells, plant cells have a cell wall for support and a large vacuole to store water.
