Valentine’s Day Luminary

Let love shine through with this pretty Valentine luminary card idea. A simple heart craft for kids that explores the science of light this Valentine’s Day.  We have had lots of fun with our science Valentines, now make an easy Valentine luminary!

HOW TO MAKE A VALENTINE PAPER LUMINARY

WHAT IS A LUMINARY LIGHT?

A luminaria is traditionally a small paper lantern (commonly a candle set in some sand inside a paper bag) which you might see at Christmas time, especially on Christmas Eve.  Check out these simple paper cup luminaria we made to celebrate the winter solstice.

Use this fun and easy Valentines luminary craft to get your kids thinking about the properties of light.

WHAT MATERIALS CAN LIGHT PASS THROUGH?

Light can pass through certain materials, such as glass, water and clear plastic.  These materials are called transparent which means you can see through them.

Translucent objects do not allow light to travel through them as easily.  Paper is translucent! For example; the tissue paper that you will use for this luminary craft allows some light to pass through but not all.  How clearly can you see the tea light candle through the tissue paper?

Opaque materials, such as wood and metals, allow no light to pass through them.

VALENTINE’S DAY LUMINARY

SUPPLIES:

  • Printable Valentine’s Day Luminary Template
  • Card-stock papers
  • Colorful tissue paper
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • LED tea light (check your local dollar stores)

INSTRUCTIONS:

Step 1: Cut out a piece from the cardstock paper for the luminary using the template. Then fold the cardstock using the template.

Step 2: Use the template or draw a heart shape on one part of the folded cardstock. Carefully use scissors to cut out the heart shape from it.

Step 3: Take a white tissue paper that is large enough to cover up the heart-shaped gap and also cut out small pieces of colorful tissue paper.

Step 5: Start gluing the colorful tissue paper on to the white tissue paper piece. Fill up the white tissue paper with the colorful tissue papers, just enough to fill up the heart shape.

Step 6: Glue the whole white tissue paper piece on the back of the heart-shaped gap.

Step 7: Apply glue on the end crease of the cardstock.  Overlap and join it with the end.  Then allow the glue to dry.

Place over an LED tea light and your Valentine’s luminary is now ready to enjoy!
