HOW TO MAKE A VALENTINE PAPER LUMINARY

WHAT IS A LUMINARY LIGHT?

A luminaria is traditionally a small paper lantern (commonly a candle set in some sand inside a paper bag) which you might see at Christmas time, especially on Christmas Eve. Check out these simple paper cup luminaria we made to celebrate the winter solstice.

Use this fun and easy Valentines luminary craft to get your kids thinking about the properties of light.

WHAT MATERIALS CAN LIGHT PASS THROUGH?

Light can pass through certain materials, such as glass, water and clear plastic. These materials are called transparent which means you can see through them.

Translucent objects do not allow light to travel through them as easily. Paper is translucent! For example; the tissue paper that you will use for this luminary craft allows some light to pass through but not all. How clearly can you see the tea light candle through the tissue paper?

Opaque materials, such as wood and metals, allow no light to pass through them.
