SUPPLIES:
- Paper Plates
- Coffee Filters
- Markers (washable)
- Spray bottle
- Water
- Scissors
- Apple Template (see below)
How to Make Coffee Filter Apples
STEP 1. Color the coffee filter with markers. Make sure to use several different colors.
Tip: Place the coffee filter on a paper plate to make it easier to color.
STEP 2. Lightly spray the coffee filter with water. Watch the colors blend to form a tie dye look!
STEP 3. Once dry cut the filter into the shape of an apple using our free apple template as an outline.
STEP 4. Cut a larger size apple out of card stock to use as a background.

Simple Science (STEAM) – Coffee Filters
Why do the colors on your coffee filter blend together when you add water? It’s all about solubility! If something is soluble, it will dissolve in the liquid (solvent). The ink used in these washable markers dissolves in water, of course!

The water (solvent) is meant to dissolve the marker ink (solute) in this coffee filter apple art. For this to happen, the molecules in both the water and the ink must be attracted to each other. When you add drops of water to the design on your coffee filter, the ink will dissolve and spread through the paper with the water,
