Why do the colors on your coffee filter blend together when you add the water? It’s all to do with solubility! If something is soluble that means it will dissolve in the liquid (solvent). The ink used in these washable markers dissolves in what? Water, of course!
In this coffee filter apple art, the water (solvent) is meant to dissolve the marker ink (solute). For this to happen, the molecules in both the water and the ink must be attracted to each other. When you add drops of water to the design on your coffee filter, the ink will dissolve and spread through the paper with the water,

This coffee filter craft is great for even non-crafty kiddos! Explore simple science with a fun take on an apple theme fall craft.
SUPPLIES:
- Paper Plates
- Coffee Filters
- Markers (washable)
- Spray bottle
- Water
- Scissors
- Apple Template
HOW TO MAKE COFFEE FILTER APPLES
STEP 1. Color the coffee filter with markers. Make sure to use several different colors.
Tip: Place the coffee filter on a paper plate to make it easier to color.
STEP 2. Lightly spray the coffee filter with water. Watch the colors blend to form a tie dye look!
STEP 3. Once dry cut the filter into the shape of an apple using our free apple template as an outline.
STEP 4. Cut a larger size apple out of card stock to use as a background.
