Kusama Valentine Instructions

Step 1: Print and Prepare the Template

Print the Kusama Valentine template and place it on a flat surface.

Step 2: Paint the Main Design

Using watercolor or acrylic paints, color the larger areas of the design (like the hair and shirt). Kusama often used bold, contrasting colors, so encourage kids to experiment with bright shades.

Step 3: Create the Dot Patterns

Dip the tip of a paintbrush, toothpick, or cotton swab into paint and start making dots all over the design. Kusama’s art often features repeating dots, so kids can layer different colors and sizes for a cool effect.

Step 4: Add the Background

Use watercolor paint to fill in the background, making sure the dots stand out! Kids can add dots in the background for a fully polka-dot-inspired masterpiece.

Who Was Yayoi Kusama?

Yayoi Kusama is a famous Japanese artist who loves using dots. She began incorporating dots into her paintings and sculptures to express her thoughts and feelings.

To Kusama, dots symbolize connection, showing how everything in the universe is linked together—like stars in the sky! Her work is colorful, playful, and energetic, making it a great inspiration for this Valentine’s Day art project.

Like many modern artists, Pop Art—Kusama’s work is influenced by bold, repetitive patterns and bright colors, similar to the Pop Art movement (including artists like Andy Warhol and Keith Haring).
