Fall Coding Pictures

By following a series of simple instructions, kids reveal hidden images of popular fall animals like squirrels and owls, all while getting a head start on understanding the concept of algorithms.

Supplies:

To start this Fall Secret Coding Pictures activity, gather a few simple supplies:

  • Printed Coding Pictures Worksheets: You can download and print these from our website.
  • Colored Pencils or Markers: Ensure you have a variety of colors to match the instructions on the worksheets.
  • A Pencil with an Eraser is useful for correcting small mistakes as kids work through the activity.

💡 Our printable Fall STEM Pack includes additional fall-themed coding activities, including binary code.

How to Do the Fall Secret Coding Pictures

Grade Level: Suitable for grades 1-4

Start at the Dot: Each worksheet begins with a dot that marks the starting point. Have your child find this point and start following the first instruction.

Follow the Directions: The directions are a series of simple steps that tell your child where to draw lines, which direction to move in, and which colors to use. As they follow each step carefully, a picture will start to emerge.

TIP: Cross out each direction after you complete it!

Complete the Picture: Follow the instructions until you fill the entire grid. As you finish, you’ll reveal the hidden fall animal!

Review and Discuss: After finishing the picture, take some time to review the process with your kids. Discuss how correctly following the algorithm (instructions) led to completing the task. If they make any mistakes, discuss how they corrected them, reinforcing the idea of debugging in coding.

💡 Debugging is finding and fixing errors or mistakes in instructions or code. In this activity, debugging involves identifying any missed or incorrect steps and correcting them to ensure the final picture turns out as intended. Debugging is an essential coding skill, helping to ensure that everything runs smoothly and works as expected.

What is Screen-Free Coding?

Screen-free coding is an innovative approach to teaching programming concepts without using digital devices. Instead of interacting with screens, kids engage in hands-on activities that teach them the fundamental coding principles through play and creativity.

In this activity, kids will follow specific directions to draw lines on a grid, ultimately uncovering a secret image. It’s a tactile way to introduce coding basics, which can be particularly beneficial for younger children just beginning to explore these concepts.

Understanding Algorithms

At the heart of these secret coding pictures lies the concept of algorithms—a set of precise instructions that guide a computer to perform a specific task. In this Fall Coding activity, kids follow an algorithm, albeit in a simple and visual form. Each step corresponds to a piece of the final picture, just as lines of code come together to create a functioning program.

By completing the activity, kids begin to grasp how algorithms work:

  • Sequencing: They learn that following steps correctly is crucial to achieving the intended result.
  • Precision: They realize that even a tiny mistake in following the algorithm can lead to a different outcome, highlighting the importance of accuracy in coding.
  • Debugging: If they make an error, children practice “debugging” by retracing their steps to find and fix the mistake, mirroring the process of troubleshooting in coding.

Want to extend the learning experience? Here are a few ideas:

Create Your Own Coding Picture

Challenge your child to design their own coding picture after completing the provided worksheets. Have them write out the instructions (algorithm) for you or a friend to follow. This reinforces the concept of algorithms and encourages creativity.
