WHO WAS FRIDA KAHLO?

Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter best known for her self-portraits. She loved to include elements from her Mexican culture, so she used many bright colors and natural images.

Frida was disabled by polio as a child but was still planning to go to school to become a doctor. However, at the age of 18, she was hit by a bus, which caused her lifelong pain and medical problems. While she was recovering, she returned to her childhood interest in art.

In the hospital, her mother provided her with a specially made easel, which allowed her to paint in bed. Her father let her borrow some of his oil paints. She had a mirror placed above the easel so that she could see herself when painting.

Frida liked wearing her long black hair braided into a tight bun and would use headpieces and
flowers for flair. She loved flowers and said she painted them “so they will not die”.
