Halloween is so much fun and the perfect opportunity to build easy Halloween sensory bin math and literacy play ideas into one activity ! I added some simple math skills activities to complement the sensory play and literacy components. Sensory bins can serve many wonderful purposes from simple play and exploration to early learning, read here for more on our sensory bins and philosophy!
HALLOWEEN SENSORY BIN MATH PLAY
Black beans (black aquarium rock would make a fun non-food filler!)
Pumpkin table scatter, pumpkin buttons, and orange gems
Mini lights (switch on underneath)
Tweezers and dice for math games
Container for sensory bin (love these hinged lid, stackable ones)
Notes: There are many non-food sensory bin fillers available! Please check my full post on all the ones we enjoy! I often gather materials each season from the dollar store. I carefully store in zip lock gallon size bags and reuse the following year! All throughout the season I try to reuse my items in various ways keeping the activities inexpensive but novel!
EASY HALLOWEEN SENSORY BIN PLAY
How did we use our Halloween sensory bin for learning and play?
Together we read books (favorite books listed at end of post) and talked about letters, letter sounds and simple sight words we are currently memorizing.
For math play, I had him sort some of the items by size and type. We also put out 6 of each item and played a take away game by rolling one die and removing the correct amount (number recognition and counting skills!). We counted what was left after we took away for beginning subtraction. Then we counted how many we were adding to our own piles for beginning addition.
Fine Motor Fun too! Sifting through the sensory filler to pull out small objects is great for little fingers. By adding a pair of kid friendly tongs you increase the fine motor practice!
Simple math games for hands-on learning through play!
Halloween Sensory Bin! Observe, explore and discover! Read and play! Practice math skills!
