BENEFITS OF SENSORY PLAY

Sensory tables or sensory bins are always a hit whether you are using them as a classroom center or at home! Plus, you can add favorite theme books to create a hands-on literacy activity.

There are so many wonderful benefits to sensory play, and you can read more about sensory bins here:

  • Practical Life Skills ~ Sensory bins let a child explore, discover and create play using practical life skills (dumping, filling, scooping) and learn valuable play skills.
  • Play Skills {emotional development} ~ Great for both social play and independent play, sensory bins allow children to play cooperatively or side by side. My son has had many positive experiences over a bin of rice with other children!
  • Language Development ~ Sensory bins increase language development from experiencing with their hands all there is to see and do which leads to great conversations and opportunities to model language.
  • Understanding 5 Senses ~Many sensory play bins include a few of the senses! Touch, sight, sounds, taste, and smell are the 5 senses. Children can experience several at a time with a sensory bin. Imagine a bin of brightly colored rainbow rice: touch the loose grains against the skin, see the vivid colors as they mix together, hear the sound of sprinkling over a plastic container or shaken in a plastic egg! Did you add a scent like vanilla or lavender? Please do not taste uncooked rice, but there are plenty of sensory play options that you use edible ingredients like our pigs in mud pudding play

HALLOWEEN SENSORY BINS

These newest Halloween sensory activities explore three wonderful textures that kids love. See how to set up each unique Halloween activity below.

1. HALLOWEEN SENSORY BIN WITH COLORED RICE

This Halloween sensory bin includes colored rice (we dyed our rice orange) and fun Halloween accessories suitable for preschoolers. We used some plastic spiders!

Rice is one of our most favorite sensory bin fillers. It feels amazing on the fingers and you can scoop it and dump it for hours. You will find a super fun collection of easy to make rice sensory bins for quick play. One large bag of rice can last for quite a while!

It’s super easy to store rice and re-use it. Simply, empty your sensory bin into a gallon zip-top bag and store in a plastic storage bin with your favorite sensory bin accessories.

There are so many things you can add to a Halloween sensory bin with rice.

  • Add tongs (from the dollar store) for fine motor play!
  • Add die for math fun! Roll the dice and count the spiders.
  • Add plastic letters for an alphabet adventure.
  • Pair with a kid-friendly book with a spider theme. (See end of post for book suggestions)

Go ahead and add your colored rice (or any of the other Halloween sensory ideas) to a large black, plastic cauldron!
