Fizzy Heart Eruptions Science

Alka Seltzer Science: It is similar to a baking soda and vinegar reaction as it produces carbon dioxide {or simple a gas} which produces the bubbles! The tablet is made up of both a citric acid {like a vinegar}  and a sodium bicarbonate {like baking soda}. When it mixes with water, the acid and sodium bicarbonate react to one another and begin producing the gas!

We have slimes, crystals, eruptions, and so much more.

Fizzy Heart Eruptions Supplies and Set Up

We actually set this up two ways! My son loved the Alka seltzer reactions so much he wanted to do them again! The first time I set up the tray with our little heart containers, baking powder {which gets foamy with water}, and those traditional heart-shaped candies. I also placed a bowl of red colored water and an eye dropper.

His job was to fill the heart container with water and drop in the Alka seltzer tablet! One whole tablet all at once produces a nice eruption! As the hearts erupted it also triggered the baking powder to begin foaming. Double eruptions!

He thoroughly enjoyed this simple fizzy heart eruptions science experiment, so he wanted to do it some more. He was mainly interested in the small containers with Alka seltzer tablets.

This time we also played around with adding pieces of alka seltzer tablets instead of just the whole one. I set out the tray again with just the containers. He filled them with water and continued his fizzy heart eruptions investigation!

You can see the bubbles and the fizzing. He listened for the fizz and felt the bubbles. Certainly the fizzy heart eruptions make wonderful visual sensory play too. The more senses involved, the more involved the child! {This is not taste safe!}

  1. I have yet to offer a fizzing experiment like this with my boys, but I’m sure they’d love it! Looks like we’ll be trying it very soon 🙂
