It’s easy to add a fun theme to a baking soda experiment and this month we have a fun Valentine’s Day chemistry activity with a love potion theme! This Valentine’s Day baking soda and vinegar experiment is perfect for exploring states of matter and chemical reactions with common kitchen ingredients. We have tons of fun Valentine science experiments you are sure to love!

LOVE POTIONS FOR KIDS

Valentine Baking Soda and Vinegar Experiment for kIds Chemistry and Valentines Day activities

VALENTINE’S DAY SCIENCE

We came up with a very fun and fizzy theme this month, a Valentine’s baking soda vinegar experiment! You can grab the basic supplies right out of the kitchen cabinet and create awesome, simple science activities the kids love!

This Valentine’s day potion mixing tray is just that! Simple, fun, and engaging for young kids and great for early childhood development. Who doesn’t like to mix potions and concoctions? Enjoy simple chemistry for Valentine’s Day!

Also check out our Valentine’s Day erupting lava lamp!

We love baking soda and vinegar experiments at any time of the year. Baking Soda Science is the best!

BAKING SODA EXPERIMENT

The kitchen is full of simple science with simple ingredients that are budget-friendly. This candy heart oobleck is great also great to make while you are mixing up new substances in the kitchen.

SUPPLIES:

  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Water with a few drops of dish soap added
  • Eye droppers and squeeze bottles
  • Glitter
  • Food coloring
  • Heart-shaped cookie cutters and mini heart containers
  • Tray to catch the eruptions

BAKING SODA VINEGAR EXPERIMENT SET UP

Here’s a simple way to set up your Valentines Day baking soda science and potion tray. If you have limited time, this science activity is perfect. Get it done in 10 minutes or let the kids explore as long as they are interested.

I like to use the lid of a clear storage container, and I always seem to have one handy.  A craft tray comes in handy for other projects too. The tray in the video above is from Ikea.

WHAT’S ON THE BAKING SODA SCIENCE TRAY:

  •  A cup of baking soda with a spoon
  • Red-colored vinegar with an eyedropper,
  • Small squeeze bottle with water and a few drops of dish detergent (don’t shake!)
  • Heart containers
  • Heart-shaped cookie cutters
  •  Glitter

NOTE: I understand glitter is not for everyone and is not especially environmentally friendly. This Valentine’s science activity will still be fun without it.

EASY VALENTINE’S DAY CHEMISTRY

You can fill the heart containers with baking soda or you can fill the heart cookie cutters in with baking soda!

All you need to do with this Valentines baking soda vinegar experiment is encourage mixing! My son already knows quite a bit about what happens when you mix baking soda and vinegar.

If this is your first time, you can steer your kids in the right direction or see if they figure it out all by themselves. The look on their faces is priceless.

BAKING SODA EXPERIMENT NOTES

You can also experiment with baking powder and water like we did here. Even better, compare the two mixtures and see which one makes better fizzy hearts.

Additionally, if you don’t have vinegar you can use lemon juice with this baking soda experiment instead.

The squeeze bottle with water and dish soap will make the eruption frothier than if you did not use soap.

My son loves to hold the squirt bottle in one hand and the eyedropper in the other and add them both at the same time. There is no wrong way to enjoy this Valentine’s day baking soda experiment!

Valentines Day Potion Mixing and Baking Soda Science Activity

BAKING SODA AND VINEGAR EXPERIMENT EXPLANATION

Fizzy hearts are all about a chemical reaction including states of matter! States of matter include solids, liquids, and gasses and a chemical reaction is when two or more things mix to form a new substance.

When the acid (vinegar) and the base (baking soda) mix together, they form a gas called carbon dioxide which is all the fizzing bubbling action you see! All three states of matter are present: liquid (vinegar), solid (baking soda), and gas (carbon dioxide)

These science trays are quick and easy to set up for kids with any holiday or seasonal theme! Plus, they use basic kitchen ingredients and include lots of experimental play time!

I would love to do this with my class! Where did you purchase the supplies? Clicking on the highlighted/underlined words does not take me anywhere. Thank you for your help!
