Why LEGO for STEM Activities?

Let’s first start with STEM! STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and math. For example, a good STEM project will intertwine two or more learning areas to complete the project, such as math and engineering. You might need to measure the exact height or width of an area where you are designing something.

STEM projects often focus on solving problems and can be based on real-world applications. Almost every good science or engineering project is a STEM activity because you have to pull from different resources to complete it. Results happen when many different factors fall into place.

Technology and math are also essential to work in the STEM framework, whether through research or measurements. For instance, kids can hop online and check out real-world models to base their designs on or help brainstorm. Tech also includes tools! Think about your brick separator…

Likewise, It’s important that kids can navigate the technology and engineering portions of STEM needed for a successful future. Most importantly, It’s good to remember there’s so much more to STEM than building expensive robots or being on screens for hours.

LEGO is a fantastic tool for developing STEM skills, and it doesn’t just have to be about using Powered Up functions or Mindstorms! For example, good ole 2×2 and 2×4 bricks will do the trick for our younger engineers. These challenges make the stepping stones to more involved LEGO STEM projects later on!
