BAKING SODA VINEGAR EXPERIMENT SET UP

Here’s a simple way to set up your Valentines Day baking soda science and potion tray. If you have limited time, this science activity is perfect. Get it done in 10 minutes or let the kids explore as long as they are interested.

I like to use the lid of a clear storage container, and I always seem to have one handy. A craft tray comes in handy for other projects too. The tray in the video above is from Ikea.

WHAT’S ON THE BAKING SODA SCIENCE TRAY:

  •  A cup of baking soda with a spoon
  • Red-colored vinegar with an eyedropper,
  • Small squeeze bottle with water and a few drops of dish detergent (don’t shake!)

NOTE: I understand glitter is not for everyone and is not especially environmentally friendly. This Valentine’s science activity will still be fun without it.

BAKING SODA EXPERIMENT NOTES

You can also experiment with baking powder and water like we did here. Even better, compare the two mixtures and see which one makes better fizzy hearts.

Additionally, if you don’t have vinegar you can use lemon juice with this baking soda experiment instead.

The squeeze bottle with water and dish soap will make the eruption frothier than if you did not use soap.

My son loves to hold the squirt bottle in one hand and the eyedropper in the other and add them both at the same time. There is no wrong way to enjoy this Valentine’s day baking soda experiment!

BAKING SODA AND VINEGAR EXPERIMENT EXPLANATION

Fizzy hearts are all about a chemical reaction including states of matter! States of matter include solids, liquids, and gasses and a chemical reaction is when two or more things mix to form a new substance.

When the acid (vinegar) and the base (baking soda) mix together, they form a gas called carbon dioxide which is all the fizzing bubbling action you see! All three states of matter are present: liquid (vinegar), solid (baking soda), and gas (carbon dioxide)

These science trays are quick and easy to set up for kids with any holiday or seasonal theme! Plus, they use basic kitchen ingredients and include lots of experimental play time!
