How To Do Fall LEGO Challenges

  1. Choose a Fall Challenge: Select from various autumn-themed builds, such as a mushroom, pumpkin, or sunflower. Each challenge has its twist to encourage creative thinking and STEM learning.
  2. Build & Complete the Challenge: Use the template to build your design, whether it’s working against the clock, creating symmetrical patterns, or estimating the number of bricks needed.
  3. Test Your Skills: Try fun twists like building with your non-dominant hand or timing yourself to beat the clock!
  4. Work as a Team: Some challenges encourage teamwork, such as those in which partners roll dice and take turns adding bricks until the design is complete.

What’s Included:

  • Three-Story Challenge: Build the rake design three times as tall by layering bricks three times.
  • Timer Challenge: How fast can you build a mushroom? Try completing it in under two minutes!
  • Race Challenge: Compete against a friend to be the first to finish building the pumpkin.
  • Symmetry Challenge: Complete the symmetrical fall leaf design by building both halves.
  • Fall Colors Challenge: Imagine this tree in all its fall glory and rebuild it using only red, orange, yellow, and brown bricks.
  • Estimation Challenge: How many bricks are needed to build the corn? Make your best guess, then count the bricks you used.
  • Opposite Hand Challenge: Try building the sunflower using your non-dominant hand.
  • Upside Down Challenge: Flip the apple design upside down for a tricky build.
  • Music Challenge: Play your favorite fall tune and see if you can finish building the acorn before the song ends.
  • Twice Is Nice Challenge: Time yourself building the apple basket, then try again to beat your time!

💡 Grade Level: These challenges are ideal for elementary school students in grades 1-5. They can easily be adapted for younger or older children by changing the speed of the challenges or increasing the complexity of the designs.

How it Relates to STEM:

Brick building challenges are a fantastic way to integrate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) into play. Kids practice engineering skills as they follow templates, estimate materials, and problem-solve each challenge. These hands-on activities also promote spatial reasoning, teamwork, and creativity—all essential components of STEM learning.

LEGO is a fantastic tool for developing STEM skills, and it doesn’t just have to be about using Powered Up functions or Mindstorms! Good ole 2×2 and 2×4 bricks will do the trick for our younger engineers. These types of challenges make the perfect stepping stones to more involved LEGO STEM projects later on!
