Summer is underway and that means school is out! My son is just getting the hang of reading, and I want him to continue full steam ahead through the summer and into first grade in the fall! These days my son is less reluctant to pick up books and read to me, and I couldn’t be more proud. To fuel his enthusiasm, I created this minifigure printable reading log to keep us on track!

MINIFIGURE PRINTABLE READING LOG FOR KIDS

We do love our minifigures around here so it is a natural theme to add to our printable reading log! So for every 20 minutes my son reads, he gets to color in a minifigure to his liking. He has started adding accessories now and has colored 14 so far! My son truly loves books and will let me read to him for hours on end even as a toddler. Look for the download button below.

READING REWARDS

To encourage him to want to read his 20 minutes, we offered an incentive every 5 colored minifigures. We will reward reading with new books! For every 5 minifigures, he gets to choose a book of his liking. He has earned two books so far and on his way to another today I bet. Reward reading with reading! He did ask that when he colored in all 30 figs, that he get both a new book and an ice cream. That is already on top of the new book for completing the last 5 figs on the sheet he said. If you can follow that, he does have some sound logic. I am all too happy to buy him books anyway.

WHAT ARE WE READING?

This is the important part of the our printable reading log! The books for him to read have to be really read-able! You will definitely want to check out my first post on our picks for THE BEST EARLY READERS to get started with some great book ideas. You will find a bunch of book ideas to add to your little reader’s book basket.

Best Early Reader Books and Free Printable Reading Log

His all time favorite books are quickly becoming the Elephant and Piggie series by Mo Willems. Check out my son’s top picks for this series below. I will also add the prize books my son has chosen! Of course they are LEGO. We will not be offering this level of prize book every time, and we do plan to continually add to the number of minifigures he has to color to earn his new book. After he completes a sheet we will determine the next goal! He has already said he wants to collect more Elephant and Piggie books. The books he chose this time are some fun ones that keep him occupied for quite awhile.
